(13,598 posts)A mixture of traditional right-wing populism - xenophobia, opposition to gun control, militarism, etc - with some left-wing populism - tax policies much more progressive than the Republican mainstream - thrown in for good measure. And he's obviously not a dangerous intellectual...

(10,362 posts)People take elections less seriously when they know their elected officials are corrupt. They figure they might as well elect an entertainer because the alternative won't be any better. They see elites as their tormentors so it's a way to stick it to them.
Secondly, the GOP field is very unappealing. A parade of uninspiring nobodies with zero charm.

(34,661 posts)messenger, much of what he is saying appeals to a segment of society that carries, hatred and racist feelings toward any one who looks different than themselves or speaks differently . He is not the first guy to go this route. Many of the John Birchers and other wannabe Libertarian's went down this road. This sucker is what he is,a fake, bully and a expert in Bankruptcy. Can not imagine anyone in his Companies working for this sucker, having any thing positive to say about him. Unless they have to sign confidentiality statements. Who knows,he did hire his crowd for his announcement didn't he.

(3,811 posts)That's the main reason why he surged ahead early. His strong birther credentials win him a certain guaranteed level of support. His outspoken denunciation of Muslims is a big crowd pleaser. Unhinged haters of Obama and all things "liberal" and "socialist" make up another part of his support. Then there are those who believe Trump's "winner-take-all", "no-holds barred", "You're Fired!" approach to business is exactly the thing we need in the White House -- both domestically and internationally.

(90,765 posts)There's a saying - You can sway a thousand men by appealing to their prejudices quicker than you can convince one man by logic.
He's not really doing anything other GOP candidates haven't done. He's saying it without the code words is all. T-Rump was taught to speak to his audience - the language he uses is a reflection of how he sees his base, and what he thinks of their intellect. He's speaking to them in the language they understand best. (hate & ignorance)
T-Rump is absolutely no better than his audience, but he would never invite them over to the penthouse.
