Why do Republicans think Bombs tick?

Now that Fox news and Sarah Palin are ripping into Ahmed for bringing a clock to school.

I have to ask, why do republicans think bombs tick, I presume this teacher heard a ticking sound and thought
"it must be a bomb"

But surly bombs dont tick?
