Its a republican nomination debate in 1979/80 with Bush and Reagan. They sound friendlier to undocumented immigrants than all Republicans and some Democrats.

(8,756 posts)In his inaguration speech he laid the groundwork for Republican anarchy. 'Government is the problem' They have been downhill ever since.
Today they have to out-anarchy each other to show their conservative credentials. Its a vicous circle they follow.

(6,342 posts)Reagan claimed they were going to fix the immigration system and secure the borders so there will never be an immigration problem in the future.
Well, apparently the system was never fixed. And so now conservatives don't trust the government to fix the problems. That's why they want the borders shut before they will agree to a path to citizenship.

Sometime in the mid-90's they hit the tipping point and the useful idiots became the base between the older generation of affluent but relatively centrist Republicans dying off and younger centrists all over the English speaking world finding a home in the new left.
