One reason to pay attention to Bristol Palin

Bristol Palin, thrust into the limelight by getting pregnant while unmarried during her mother’s vice presidential campaign, subsequently embarked on a short-lived reality television show—the latest manifestation of the American eagerness to make money without actually working—and became pregnant a second time while serving as a representative for an abstinence campaign. It’s your choice to decide whether she is a comic figure or a pathetic one.

But I think that the reason to pay any attention to her is that she is also a representative figure: a young person of slender education, modest abilities, and deep resentments. There are multitudes like her among us with simplistic beliefs based on shaky information and unexamined prejudices.

Many of them vote, and they are not going to fade away. Some way has to be found to address their concerns without hysterical misinformation. These people’s belief that their country is being taken away from them, their anxieties about a multicultural society personified by Obama, have been exacerbated by the economic slippage of the middle class. One issue is connected to the others. Demagogy is easy; governance is hard.

Trap did a hitch in the Army and is now (I think) working on his dad's fishing boat. Bristol living from grift to grift and her baby daddies' child support. I'm sure the others will follow suit.

losers and those who think the laws don't apply in great numbers. They think they can come here and be stupid and 'free'.

Sarah Palin is from Idaho and her dad taught high school science. Go figure.

3. Bristol Palin isn't a true representative of clueless young people.

Most young people, even the most clueless ones, don't have ignorant, narcissistic parents who once ran unsuccessfully for Vice President and made asses of themselves in the process, and ever since have been grasping desperately for more publicity and relevance. Bristol is unique in that regard - her dingbat mother has ensured that she will remain clueless and angry and equally desperate for more publicity. Other young people "of slender education, modest abilities, and deep resentments" might be salvageable if they aren't subjected to the malign and IQ-destroying influence of someone like Sarah Palin.

Like her mom, she can blather incoherent nuttiness and a certain segment will lap it right up.

She is taking a page from Ann Coulter's play book and making outrageous statements to get media coverage. This drives the hits up on her blog, her face book page, her twitter, her instagram, etc. As her hits go up, it is easier for her to get paid for advertising. She is probably charging to speak at conservative meetings just like her mother. I think she could care less about the issues and doesn't feel resentful. After all she need only to look at her mom, she has made buckets of money doing not much of anything.

those of slender education, modest abilities and deep resentments, had jobs that could support them, they would be mostly fine. They would stop being so resentful and get on with their lives.
