School is officially in session for most of the U.S., and a generous attorney is making sure the kids in his community are starting off the academic year fully prepared.
Mike Morse, a lawyer who owns a firm of the same name, donated just over $250,000 to provide 23,000 backpacks to Detroit students, People.com reported. Stuffed with brand new school supplies, the bags got all students -- many who otherwise would have secondhand supplies or nothing at all -- on the same page for the school year.
I think it teaches them that there are people out there in the community that care about them, Morse said in a video produced for the law firm. They want them to succeed, that want them to win at life.
The initiative had a trial run in May, when the Mike Morse Law Firm brought 400 backpacks to students in kindergarten through fifth grade at Wayne Elementary School, CBS Detroit reported. When it was a success, Morse sought to grow the project to reach more students in need.
I thought, 'Lets do this in a bigger way. Lets find out how many kids there are in the Detroit Public School system, K through 5 range,' Morse told the news outlet. We found out there was 23,000 of them and my law firm said, lets do this.
