Puppy shoots Florida Man---Deputies say Dog put paw on gun's trigger as owner tried to kill him

Finally, a Stand Your Ground defense I can get behind.

Bruce Rova director of the Escambia County Animal Regulation and Control in Pensacola, Fla. holds the puppy that the animal shelter is calling Trigger, Friday, Sept. 10, 2004. The dog along with the other puppies was involved in an incident where owner Jerry Allen Bradford, 37, was about to shoot them when Trigger allegedly hit the gun trigger and shot the owner in the wrist. Allen face charges of animal cruelty for shooting several other puppies. GARY MCCRACKEN

Puppy shoots Florida man, deputies say
Dog put paw on gun's trigger as owner tried to kill him

: Sunday, September 19, 2004

Jerry Allen Bradford, 37, was being treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound to his wrist.
Bradford said he decided to shoot the 3-month-old shepherd-mix dogs in the head because he couldn’t find them a home, according to the sheriff’s office.

On Monday, Bradford was holding two puppies — one in his arms and another in his left hand — when the dog in his hand wiggled and put its paw on the trigger of the .38-caliber revolver. The gun then discharged, the sheriff’s report said.

...............

Deputies found three of the puppies in a shallow grave outside Bradford’s home, said sheriff’s Sgt. Ted Roy.

The other four appeared to be in good health and were taken by Escambia County Animal Control, which planned to make them available for adoption.

In my area, it costs $25 neuter for $45 for spay, or free if you live in certain zip codes or go to the mobile unit. Vaccinations start at $11. But bigger cities than mine in this state don't have those kind of low cost services. Still, I wonder how many rescue organizations he tried before deciding to shoot them.

Both my niece's dogs were rescues from two different shelters but both dogs were born in Tennessee. She was told at one of the shelters that they get most their young dogs from TN, older ones are usually surrendered by a local.

When I was a kid living in the country, people didn't take their pets to the vet very often. If they were sick or dying, they shot them.

In my case, my stepfather was even worse. We had a female dog...of course we never got her fixed...who thought about that in those days? So, she had 12 puppies. My stepfather said she couldn't nurse that many (she was a small/medium dog), but the real thing is he didn't want to have to find homes for so many puppies. So, he decided we needed to drown most of the pups.

Of course he was going to teach us girls (I was 13, my sisters, 14, and 15) about being responsible pet owners, by making us do it. I refused and ran crying back into the house. My other two sisters did what he forced them to do. I'll never forgive him to this day. Fortunately, he didn't live to old age. I think he died in his 50's.

I know there are times when you have to shoot livestock (especially large livestock) when it's injured, sick or dying. And a lot of people still slaughter their animals at home. But they don't do it by GOD DAMN DROWNING them.

So I guess this idiot in the OP learned his lesson...take the pups to an animal rescue/adoption place, or fix your damned animals so you don't have babies to worry about, or they might just shoot you. Good Dog!

67. I know that this is a 'fun' story, but
Tue Sep 22, 2015, 03:29 PM

in many places it costs $100 to $200 to spay or neuter an animal. And many shelters ask for a fee before they'll take in an animal, it is not uncommon that it would cost $25 or more to 'leave' an animal at a shelter.

I am not condoning what this guy did, but something has to be done about fees.

I know I'm trying to make friends with 2 cats that were left by owners, so I can get them spayed or neutered. They don't come around all the time, so I have to make them come on schedule, to get them when I can get an appointment with the Cat Coalition. One may not make it much longer, I don't know if she/he is old or in pain, but it has that look like it's giving up.

It's worth noting, I think, that if the man had taken the dogs to a veterinarian he could have had them killed and there would be no criminal charges. If he had given them to a dog pound and they weren't picked by anyone, the pound could have killed them (unless there are local or state laws against this). A bullet or a euthanasia accomplish the same end result.

will not kill healthy animals on demand, especially a pup.

the killing factories erroneous called shelters need to be shut down and replaced wih no kill facilities. and the rampant breeding for profit has to stop. spay neuter must be mandatory absent a medical preclusion.

but the fact that a pound might have killed them (puppies have a better chance at adoption) is no excuse for this cretin to get his neanderthal on and shoot a defenseless animal in the head.

and the fact that he had possible legal options and decided to be a violent asshole just shows his lack of gray matter.

(and yes i am fully aware neanderthals did not use guns)

I have a rare form of non hodskins lymphoma. I have two-three years at the most. To keep my strength up my oncologist insisted I get some exercise so I walk my dog, without a leash (the pure joy on my dog's face tells me he likes it that way) through our neighborhood (I try to get in a mile but some mornings I am just too weak to make the entire walk) every morning at daybreak. I have done this for the last year or so after I had my tonsils removed and they found the cancer.
Over the last week or so, one of the meanest nastiest woman I have ever spoken to, (we usually head west because Buddy likes his privacy) declared her yard off limits to Buddy. She did this with a string of cursing, arm swinging, and just plain hateful language (I worked with many a man that couldn't out curse her) regarding Buddy and the messes he (didn't) make in her yard. I have never met this woman, never had a problem with any of my neighbors.
Buddy has been taught to go in the Right of way of the road, it's a fairly rural subdivision. Built back in the seventies for low income families. As far as the mess he didn't make I tried to reason with her and told her of my plight (lymphoma, needing exercise etc.) and that Buddy, being fourteen years old himself needed the exercise.
As Buddy stood by my side on the public road she tried to kick him, she missed thank goodness or I would be in jail. Then told me to go f....myself and pray my cancer riddled body would just go on and die. I assured her we will never travel that far south again. Man talk about getting up on the wrong side of the bed.
Buddy is nearly deaf. He answers with hand signals mostly. He is a good friendly dog just trying to get through this old world, like me and millions of others. Hell of a way to start the day.
