Sean Penn has filed a $10 million defamation lawsuit against Empire creator Lee Daniels.
The complaint, filed Tuesday in New York Supreme Court, asserts that in Daniels' recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Penn was falsely accused of hitting women when compared to Empire star Terrence Howard.
(Howard) ain't done nothing different than Marlon Brando or Sean Penn, and all of a sudden he's some (expletive) demon," Daniels told THR in reference to to Howard's legal troubles, which include a lawsuit filed this summer by his ex-wife Michelle Howard, who alleges Howard beat her in 2013. "That's a sign of the time, of race, of where we are right now in America."
In the complaint, Penn states he will "no longer tolerate" allegations of past violence against women. (The actor's Wikipedia page has long been a thorn in the Penn's side, repeating allegations he abused his ex-wife, Madonna.)

(16,286 posts)What I do know is men beat Women, all the time.
It has to stop, no matter what.
We need more Women in positions of power handing down harsher penalties when men beat Women.
Putting your hand on a Woman in violence is terrible.
Now if you are a small, weenie man and the Woman is big and tough and can kick your ass and she puts her hand on you, then maybe.
But that is one in one hundred thousand, isnt it.

(6,324 posts)I think the most well researched studies put ten rates at about 1 in 3 for women and 1 in 4 for men.
And, of course, we can't act like only heterosexual couples have DV problems.
The difference is that with the physical differences between men and women when a male is the perpetrator of the violence the victim, male or female, is more likely to be injured worse. And when a male is a victim at the hands of a female he is far less likely to report it- or often even consider himself to have been the victim of DV.
The old stereotype and misconception that DV is only male against female violence is alive and well, even here on DU. I arrested many surprised women on DV calls when I was a deputy because they would admit they slapped or punched or pushed their husband/boyfriend/whatever first but they were "the girl" so it wasn't DV when they did it- wrong answer, turn around and try on my stainless bracelets.

(13,517 posts)is a jerk: "Look, Sean Penn did it and you all love him, so don't get on Howard's back about his past transgressions!"
And Sean Penn may be opening a can of worms here. People are going to remember that it was once public knowledge that he hit Madonna over the head with a baseball bat. She may deny any allegations now, but he was arrested for it at the time. The details probably don't matter anymore.
