SIDNEY, Neb. Opponents of a proposed oilfield disposal well in northwest Nebraska characterized the state agency that regulates the oil and gas industry as a rogue, reckless organization that should be eliminated.
Advocates for the Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, however, said it would be overkill to get rid of an agency with a long reputation of excellence, expertise and ethical behavior.
The conflicting images of the low-profile commission gushed to the surface with the energy of an oil strike during a special legislative hearing Tuesday in Sidney.
It was a crash course in geology and oil and natural gas exploration and production for seven members of the Legislatures Natural Resources Committee, three other senators and the crowd of about 300. They heard testimony over five hours from nearly 40 people in the auditorium at Sidney High School.
