Dianne Hoffmeyer, was ordering doughnut holes for her 2-year-old and a cup of coffee for herself at Tim Horton's in Fort Gratiot, Mich., when she heard two women behind her commenting on her appearance. She said the women called her a "whale" and commented on her hair.
What the women didn't know, Hoffmeyer said, was that the doughnut holes she purchased were for her 2-year-old daughter, Liliana, who'd been up all night teething.
And the coffee was meant to be a pick-me-up after a long night with Liliana and an early morning doctor's appointment for the toddler. They also didn't know that Hoffmeyer, 41, recently had lost 177 pounds over 22 months after being diagnosed with congestive heart failure during her pregnancy with Lily.
"I was really mad and I'm usually not quiet," Hoffmeyer said. "I've got a big mouth." Instead of retaliating, Hoffmeyer held her tongue and paid for the women's coffee. She said her kids influenced her decision.

(146,288 posts)Very poorly done by the nasty women who commented on her appearance. I hope, but doubt, that they got the message. It's a lot of nasty people out there, it seems.

(6,399 posts)It's like people wondering why this is "national" news.
It's not. It's a human interest story that's easily shareable and is basically a time filler on a local news broadcast or something that works well for social media sharing/brand awareness.
It's not "news".
but what's reported is always changing based on how society changes. Not better/worse, just different.

(8,175 posts)Sometimes life just gets too serious and people can't see the humor in any of it, intended or not.
Life is much more fun if you look for humor in just about everything.
Basically, the jury should be assuming sarcasm is meant, unless there is proof in the poster's history otherwise. This trend in the thread was so obvious, I don't know how they messed this up. Can a hide be undone if it's wrong?

(50,566 posts)It's probably not worth it, but ... yeah ... people need to realize that a lot of us use sarcasm as a primary method of communication.

The problem is sociological, not communicative.

(2,931 posts)hahah... oh man, that was good. Thanks for sticking up for sarcasm too. I have had a few hides basically for not putting the sarcasm tag at the end. And one when I actually did use it :X
Act_of_Reparation
(9,116 posts)But "sarcasm doesn't work on the internet" isn't one of them. Perhaps one or two people here and there might have difficulty identifying sarcasm, but you need four in one place at one time to get a post hidden. Unless I am taking an overly optimistic view of the average DUer's ability to read, I think those are some very unlikely odds.
Rather, I think there are two big problems:
1) People who, when called upon to serve on a jury, fail to take the necessary time and effort to put the questioned post into context. Generally, any doubt as to a post's authenticity can be cleared up by reading the antecedent posts. In short, this problem is laziness, pure and simple.
2) People who use DU as a yardstick by which to measure their liberal peen. These are the purity trolls who strut around casting doubt upon the authenticity of anyone who dares disagree with them, who are practically chomping at the bit for a chance to expose all of the "fake" liberals on DU.
I'd like to think the issue is more a product of the former than the latter, but again, I might be overly optimistic.

(33,224 posts)... the poster's intent.
He's absolutely right. It's a sad commentary that the asshole behavior of the women is somehow mitigated by "what they didn't know".

(6,604 posts)I would use a stronger term here than "unfortunate," which is way too polite, IMO.
In some percentage of randomly selected juries, you're bound to draw a passel of borderline illiterates.
The system just begs for an appeals process!

(478 posts)Tim Horton's is now a legally owned subservient subsidary of Burger King. It is now illegal in Canada to refer to them by the quaint sobriquet of "Timbits." Stephan Harper signed the official decree that that they shall now and forever be known throughout the land as "The Creepy King's Testicles." Thank you for your compliance.

(4,302 posts)if this woman is a "whale" to somebody, I'd be a brontosaurus to them.
Second, why is there an explanation in the article as to why Hoffmeyer was buying donut holes? Can't she just... buy donut holes and enjoy them? Why do we need to know they were for her teething daughter?
I get that it was supposed to show that the insulting women were wrong in their apparent assumption that this woman who was a "whale" in their eyes was about to gobble down some baked goods but seriously who gives a shit? I wouldn't want to justify their small-minded judgment with an explanation of why she was buying donut holes in the first place.
Not sure if I'm even making sense. It's been a long day.
