A Miami police officer was suspended from duty after he reportedly yanked a 5-year-old boys ear and handcuffed him at school.
According to Miamis Local10.com, parent Hector Feliciano said that Officer Paul Gourrier of the Miami Police Department seized his son by the ear and then handcuffed his hands behind his back after the boy bit another child in a dispute over a toy.
The incident took place on Feb. 9 and was the latest in a series of clashes between the two boys. Teacher Michelle Svayg took the child to guidance counselor Margarita Fernandez office for a meeting with the counselor Officer Gourrier.
Fernandez told police that the boy continued to misbehave in her office, treating the disciplinary meeting as if everything was a joke.

Comment: If the kid was at a parochial school,I know his ear lobe would be a lot longer. The cop did the right thing and the kid will remember it and not have a juvie record.

(2,065 posts)a five year old as discipline is out of control in my opinion. Any cop who thinks handcuffs are appropriate on a five year old is a straight out moron.

(2,065 posts)was ever considered as an option. Five year old hits five year old, so thirty five year old steps in to physically hurt five year old?? It's ludicrous.
Conversing, empathy, problem solving and anger management books, time outs, revoking privileges are appropriate responses.

(2,065 posts)does not instill respect in a five year old. It teaches the five year old that he lives in a world with other people who are violent and unworthy of respect. It teaches him that he better act the way the the larger and more violent want him to, until such time as he can become the larger more violent one.
Adults harming small children is what has created the sick world we live in. It's far past time that we change how we deal with problematic behavior in small children. It takes consistency, patience, compassion and a dedication to the welfare of children. Unfortunately, there are so many wounded adults walking around, the idea that it's ok to physically harm a human who weighs 100 pounds less than you if they act in a way you don't like, is prevalent.
Do you think the cop could twist the ear and handcuff a grown up that wasn't showing him what he considered to be proper respect?
