Hawksbill Sea Turtle Takes Its First Swim

A baby hawksbill sea turtle ventures off the beach in Nicaragua for the first swim of its life. Workers at the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Hawksbill Turtle Conservation Project are monitoring the nests of the endangered sea turtles and have found 311 on the beaches so far this year.

Even with conservationists’ efforts, poachers have gotten to 15 of the nests WCS has located this season. Last year, the team counted 468 nests in Nicaragua’s Pear Cays—up from 154 nests in 2000.

In addition to monitoring the nesting sites, WCS scientists have been able to tag and release 16 sea turtles to track their ocean voyages.
