Abuse Victim Advocate Blasts Pope’s Remarks on US Bishops’ ‘Courage’

("COURAGE" on the part of the bishops in dealing with this horror???? "COURAGE"?????? what a load of codswallop!! "COURAGE"???--when diocese are declaring bankruptcy rather than settle with the survivors? "COURAGE"????? BS!!! and another thing, I have known about the abuse for decades--there was even a news segment about it, about how priests were being transferred from one diocese to another to cover it up, decades ago. and I am still waiting for the apologies and settlements about the magdalene laundry horrors)

Abuse Victim Advocate Blasts Pope’s Remarks on US Bishops’ ‘Courage’

In a statement released Wednesday by the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), president Barbara Blaine blasted Pope Francis for his praise of US bishops’ “courage,” accusing the pontiff of doing “little if anything” to meaningfully address the Catholic Church’s decades-long sex
Pope Francis, in a homily delivered at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle in Washington, D.C., one of several stops on his first US tour, told the nearly 300 bishops in attendance that he was “conscious of the courage with which you have faced difficulty moments in the recent history of the Church in this country without fear of self-criticism and at the cost of mortification and great sacrifice.”

Blaine, who founded SNAP in 1988 as a self-help organization for victims of clergy sexual abuse, wasted no time in challenging the pope’s characterization of the Church’s disastrous handling of the scandals, noting no clergy have been “defrocked, demoted, disciplined or even publicly denounced” despite the revelation of at least 100,000 victims over the course of 30 years of known abuse. “What sacrifice?,” questioned Blaine. “What bishop takes fewer vacations, drives a smaller car, does his own laundry or has been passed over for promotion because he’s shielding predators and endangering kids? None.”

Today, the Vatican stood by the pope’s comments. “I am not surprised that there are critics that are not happy,” said Vatican Press Secretary, Rev. Federico Lombardi. “This is not the first time.”

Despite decades of occurrence, clergy sexual abuse only entered the public consciousness thirteen years ago, following an explosive exposé by the Boston Globe. According to Blaine, in the years since, Catholic Church officials have taken few steps to protect children from future victimization.

“[Pope Francis’] remarks today confirm what we’ve long suspected: this pope, like his predecessors, is doing and will do little if anything to bring real reform to this continuing crisis. Those who care about kids must focus on secular authorities, not church figures (however popular they may be).

11. Let me tell you a story about the courage of Catholic bishops

I was in a Catholic seminary in the late '60s -- early '70s. I left in my last year. One of my classmates, who was ordained a priest, was assigned to Albany NY.

He was caught molesting boys. The bishop transferred him to another parish, where he was again caught molesting boys. So, the bishop transferred him to a third parish, where he was again caught molesting boys.

So, the bishop passed him off the the Archdiocese of Boston, where Cardinal Bernard Law assigned him to a parish. Guess what? He was again caught molesting boys. So, Law sent him to another parish, where he was caught molesting boys. Then, Law sent him to yet another parish, where he was once again was caught molesting boys.

So, the two bishops had enough. Summoning up all the "courage" at their disposal, they got him a job in a facility for troubled teenage boys. Guess what?

The bishop of Albany is still in his position and Bernard Law is in hiding in the Vatican where he is living like -- and being treated as -- a prince.

Courage. Pfffft.

That story is local to me. Though it occurred before my time, it certainly wasn't the first or last time and the effects left a terrible scar on the community. But that scar is nothing compared to the countless victims - especially those who could have been spared had the church DONE something. Dolan was party to the cover-ups. Dolan was party to paying tens and thousands of dollars TO these monsters. He literally gave cash bonuses in addition to lifetime salaries for raping and sexually assaulting children. Then Dolan hid millions of the RCC's money to keep it from victims.

Evil evil shit.

Deliver Us from Evil (2006), a documentary about a sex abuse case in Northern California:

Deliver Us from Evil is a 2006 American documentary film directed by Amy J. Berg which explores the life of Catholic priest Oliver O'Grady, who admitted to having molested and raped approximately 25 children in Northern California between the late 1970s and early 1990s.[1] The film won the Best Documentary Award at the 2006 Los Angeles Film Festival and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, losing to An Inconvenient Truth.[2] The title refers to a line in the Lord's Prayer.

Synopsis

The film chronicles O'Grady's years as a priest in Northern California, where he committed his crimes. After being convicted of child molestation and serving seven years in prison, O'Grady was deported to his native Ireland. Berg interviewed him there in 2005 for the film. Additionally, the film presents trial documents, videotaped depositions, and interviews with activists, theologians, psychologists, and lawyers; it suggests that Church officials were aware of O'Grady's crimes, and they took steps to conceal them to protect him and the church.[3][4]

Twist of Faith is a 2004 American documentary film directed by Kirby Dick about a man who confronts the Catholic Church about the abuse he suffered as a teenager. The film was produced for the cable network HBO and screened at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. It received an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature.[1]

The film focuses on Tony Comes, a firefighter from Toledo, Ohio, who was first sexually abused by a Catholic priest when he was a fourteen-year-old student at a Catholic high school. Feeling ashamed, Comes kept his secret for nearly 20 years but was forced to confront his past after discovering that the priest, Dennis Gray, was living on the same street as Comes, his wife, and their two young children. Comes decided to go public and bring a lawsuit against the priest and Church leaders who had neglected to take action after reading a series of investigative stories in the Toledo Blade revealing sweeping patterns of abuse and cover up in the diocese—including interviews with other Gray victims.

The filmmakers gave Comes and his wife camcorders which they used to record many of the film's scenes. Twist of Faith also includes other older family footage, including a scene in which Comes explains his abuse to his nine-year-old daughter.[2]

The film also features interviews with several other men who had been abused by Gray, and these survivors reunite to discuss their continuing struggles. Other scenes include Dennis Gray's deposition in which he avoids responding to charges of abuse and coverup, Comes's confrontation with his mother about her decision to stand by the Catholic Church, and Comes's visit to a conference held by the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP).

How can you say your God is loving, when his ambassadors on earth are raping children with impunity? Sounds like they worship that Satan guy I keep hearing them talk about.

And all over the fact that women cannot be priestesses like they once were and men cannot marry. Fucked up belief system, if you ask me. Totaly at odds with it's supposed core tenets.
