As Carly Fiorina suddenly climbs the republican polls in the 2016 race after having nearly fallen off the map just a month ago, questions about her campaign are surfacing left and right. How did she make such a mess of Hewlett Packard? Why did she illegally sell computers to Iran? Why was she so upset about Donald Trump criticizing her physical appearance when she did the same thing to a political opponent five years ago? But the most mysterious question may be this: why is Fiorina’s campaign being financed with Ted Cruz’s money?

In one of the stranger storylines of an already historically strange election season, Carly Fiorina accepted half a million dollars this summer from a Super PAC which was supposed to have been designated for republican rival Ted Cruz. The donation came at a time when Fiorina was polling at around one percent and had little fundraising success, and appears to have been an attempt at keeping her in the race awhile longer. Cruz and Fiorina have no known political connection beyond both being republicans, and are currently opponents. So why has he been funding her campaign through its rough spots?

Fiorina spent much of the election cycle launching one hyperbolic attack on Hillary Clinton after another, seemingly having been designated as the party’s resident attack dog, perhaps based on her gender. At a time when Fiorina’s campaign was in danger of folding, it appears that Cruz and/or the republican party funneled the money to her in order to make sure she remained the race, ostensibly so she could keep attacking Clinton. And while that’s just a theory, it’s the most plausible reason we can think as to why Carly Fiorina’s campaign is running on money that had been originally donated specifically for Ted Cruz.
