The vast majority of the GOP still hate Catholics and use RW Catholics for votes. They really don't like them though. I remember when most Catholics were Democratic Party members. They used abortion to get the Catholic vote, while destroying safety nets and advocating death by war and execution. These are things Catholics are taught to reject. I don't get RW Catholics.

(14,459 posts)My Grandparents fell to the dark side from being lifelong Dems to rabid Reagan supporters. They fell via religion- I asked them once when I was learning about politics why they were afraid of Commies- their answer was that Communists closed Churches. Being a sincere Catholic alter boy at the time, that just struck me as utterly wrong- christianity is MEANT to be an underground and persecuted religion...Matthew practically painted it in red letters!
Even more than that, they saw the decline of their Church's power in the real world, and wanted to reverse that. A lot of the remaining flock love the RW because they promise to empower the churches and hurt the rival religions and people they don't approve of.
It's pretty sick all the way around.

(15,237 posts)In his case even with Fundie Propaganda in hand there was no reasoning with him of the hate directed towards Catholics. In his case family members claim this extreme RW emerged when he sought Church intervention for a gay relationship. Family and old friends avoid him.

(631 posts)Catholics, like right wing Protestants, will vote against their own interests if they think they can prevent women from having abortions, and Republicans have successfully exploited that to split Catholics away from the Democratic Party. That's what this stunt with the Pope in our congress, carefully saying to protect life at "every stage of development", aside from reinforcing GOP plans to defund Planned Parenthood, was all about.
Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm not Catholic, but I think they believe the soul enters the fertilized egg at the moment of conception, with original sin attached, requiring salvation later on. There's no proof of any of this, of course, because it's a religious belief. But, convinced of their own righteousness, they believe all women, Catholic or not, must accept what they say as proof of god's will. And of course, there is no proof of that, either.
So, what we have here is a bunch of boneheads, Catholics and Protestants alike, who want the rest of us to obey them, even though they offer no proof of their views.
