Larry Wilmore hosted Black Lives Matter activist DeRay Mckesson for a roundtable discussion on Jeb Bush who suggested that black voters expect free stuff in exchange for their electoral support.
I never watched a black protest and heard, No free stuff, no peace,' said Nightly Show contributor Mike Yard. You dont hear that sh*t. Were usually asking for expensive stuff, like justice and equal rights and whatnot.
Wilmore wondered exactly what sort of free stuff that Bush thought Democratic candidates promised to black voters.
I must be blacklisted from the blacklist, because I aint never got sh*t, Yard said.
They talk about, like, God, family and country but its God until its about poor people, its family until family is, like, same-sex and inclusive, and its country until it involves black people, Mckesson said.

.are buried in the term, "free stuff". Beyond the obvious onedoesn't it imply that Black people who aren't working for slave wages want "free stuff? I mean, for the first few hundred years of this country, the expectation was that slave owners could pay their workers nothing for their labor.
Ergo, the whistle says, any Black person who doesn't agree to this "expectable" arrangement and requires economic justice, wants by default, "free stuff".

(10,252 posts)There's isn't a republican alive who wouldn't pocket a $20 bill he found on the street. Free stuff ain't free. Free stuff like public education, and healthcare and roads and bridges and airports and parks and snow removers, and fire depts are paid for with TAXES!!! Unless of course, republicans come along and "privatize" everything that isn't nailed down.

(9,865 posts)Actually the "free stuff" goes to the Walmarts etc. who use the roads, the health care, and the food stamps for their workers that we, the 99, pay for.

(39,215 posts)believing that raygun's welfare queen was black.
In the 80s I was doing some lobbying that involved knowing the statistics of various welfare programs. White recipients at that time outnumbered black recipients but the country was in full denial - thus even today "free stuff" and the "welfare queen" still ring a bell for the bigots.
Raygun used racism to make the people hate welfare even more than they already did and that greed and hatred has been used to destroy the safety net from then on.
The bigots have just changed the phrase from "welfare queen" to "free stuff".
Deray is an excellent speaker for BLM.
is still majority white recipients, as I understand it.
Thanks for the reminder about Bonzo. Such a disaster for the country.

(39,215 posts)correct. White recipients still outnumber black recipients.
I run into that one all the time. As if there are no black people with jobs. Hello, you are the same people claiming black people get jobs undeservedly as affirmative action. And as if no white person ever went on welfare. And as though most recipients are temporary (it's always either or and people spend their whole lives on welfare or they don't - the statistics do not show that).
There are welfare cheats, but they then make the assumption they all are - an assumption entirely uncalled for.

(57,936 posts)Jeb Bush inherited wealth. He should not be talking about "free stuff."
Jeb Bush -- a lucky sperm.

(19,288 posts)Is the perfect argument for a nice high inheritance tax. JEB should not receive one cent off the estate of his parents because it will weaken his character and deprive him of the opportunity to make it on his own. Vast sums of unearned income without having to work for it can be squandered on frivolous material items and squelch any desire to go to work. It leads to alcoholism and drug abuse. And having no compassion for those less fortunate. It creates ingratitude. He needs to learn how to pay his own fucking way. Hypocrite.
It deprives the country of money to pay down the debt, and provide for defense and the common welfare of the country. Vast fortunes should not be poured back into the pockets of millionaire kids. It ruins the foundation of democracy by not keeping the money in circulation for the good of the country. We either move more Socialist or we move more Fascist.
His brother was the worst, most corrupt, inept, evil, pawn, liar, puppet president in history. He'll be up with Stain and Hitler in world history for wreaking havoc on the middle east that echos today.

(3,282 posts)...into its own OP. A very important point. GOP talking heads talk about free stuff constantly, but the real recipients of a lot of free stuff are the wealthy with tax shelters, the corporations with tax dodges, and wealthy heirs who didn't work for mummy's and daddy's money.

(943 posts)summed it all up. Why would we/Americans want the brother of W who,
"was the worst, most corrupt, inept, evil, pawn, liar, puppet president in history. He'll be up with Stain and Hitler in world history for wreaking havoc on the middle east that echos today".
Jeb might as well hire devil dick to write his foreign policy. I'm so glad he's tanking in the polls 'mother knows best'.
IMO, if Joe runs, he will tank as well, there is no daylight between Hillary and Joe. The Pope and Bernie is educating the American people the real meaning of socialism.

(581 posts)for. The entire family has been given what they own and live in. Or is it from the taxpayers. The Bush family should be ashamed of those comments. Jeb took millions for doing nothing. Let him talk about that.

(65,030 posts). . .a pointless argument. These folks really do believe they've earned it. Somehow if someone in the family's past did something big and earned tons of money, the inherited wealth upon which they depend is something they (read family three generations ago) earned.
You'll never get them to see your point, and worse, middle and working class folks who vote for them think they way people like Bush The Slightly Less Stupid do.
gratuitous
(82,849 posts)And every Bush will go to his or her grave thinking that their pampered life of privilege and luxury was paradoxically the norm and absolutely merited.
We don't have to adopt their reality, though, and we can dissuade others from thinking that the wealthy are entitled to the nation's wealth generation after generation forever.

(65,030 posts)I think you're arguing with the wrong person. If you read my post, you will see we obviously agree.

(82,849 posts)I think you're responding to the wrong post. If you read my post, you will see we obviously agree. My only addendum was that people not in the Bush family tree didn't have to adopt the Bush worldview.
ProfessorGAC
(65,030 posts)And we agree. I will still suggest, however, that while they didn't HAVE TO adopt it, an awful lot of folks did and that's why some of them vote against their own best interests to keep the privileged few in a position where they can still reinforce their own beliefs that they've earned it.
Obviously, not universal. You and i don't buy it.
