Ashford (DINO? NEBR) wants U.S. House to follow Legislature’s lead on electing leaders

WASHINGTON — Rep. Brad Ashford thinks House members should follow Nebraska’s example on how to elect a speaker: Do it by secret ballot.

The Omaha Democrat plans to introduce a resolution today named Effective Leadership Elections for Congressional Trust that would change the rules for House speaker elections. Instead of a public roll call vote, Ashford is proposing a secret ballot.

That’s how the officially nonpartisan Nebraska Legislature elects its speaker.

Ashford said making the change would help counter the insidious influence of special interest groups and tamp down the opportunity for reprisals against those on the losing side.

a way of letting DINOs vote with the Rs without letting anyone else know. I suspect this will pass but I am opposed to it.

What he means by reprisal is from the voters. No one should be safe from the voters.

That's why Hillary Clinton voted against the Bush Tax Cuts...

and why Kay Hagan and Mary Landrieu voted in favor of gun background checks...

and why Max Baucus, Evan Bayh, Mark Begich voted in favor of repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell...

You know, the only think worse than a bad conspiracy theory is a lazy one.

I'm glad that you acknowledged that Hillary is a "moderate/conservative" democrat. You wouldn't mind deciding which one would you?

BTW - I note that nobody has offered anything but "we all know" platitudes to support the OPs allegation that non-progressive Democrats would vote for Republican leadership.

Let's see, who was leading the party then?????

I'm actually one who thinks that there'd be a fair amount of "cross aisle" voting. I think there'd be as much if not more danger of the GOP not voting for the tea party dude than Blue Dogs voting for a GOP candidate. Quite honestly, in a secret ballot, presuming the dems bothered to vote at all, you might be surprised how many would have voted to keep Bohner in, merely to avoid somebody worse getting elected.

As I recall, Dean was in 2008. And in 2014 the party leaders decided to run away from the White House.
