Who, despite what one might say about the Cuban healthcare system, doesn't really have much of a reputation of being a particularly friendly or freedom loving guy.

The Pope has met Vladimir Putin. Ditto on that.

Bottom line is getting an audience with the Pope doesn't necessarily mean he's going to endorse everything you stand for. (Hell, he and President Obama seem to get along just fine and they certainly don't see eye to eye on everything.) It just means he's willing to talk to you.

So while I think it's likely that Davis and the Pope might share a basic personal opposition to gay marriage in principle, him meeting with her (which was arranged on her end, not his) doesn't necessarily mean he's endorsing her stunt of shutting down the clerk's office and refusing to let any of its employees issue licenses. The rather downplayed response from the Vatican and extremely muted acknowledgment and the very vague, generic comments from the Pope himself seem to indicate an unwillingness by the Pope to want to be caught up in the greater debate over Davis' actions.

Oh, and the Pope has also met Angelina Jolie. The fuck's that about?

After receiving a surprise phone call from a church official, the Kentucky county clerk says she traveled to Washington, D.C., where she and her husband Joe met the pope Sept. 24 at the Vatican Embassy.

She could be lying, of course, but you seem certain that she is. What's the evidence?

good stuff from the Pope's point of view. The 7.2% of Ugandans living with HIV or the yearly 60,000 dead or all of the orphans they leave behind many or may not agree with the Pope's theories about what is a threat to families and their points of view are likely to be diverse, particularly among the orphans because there are millions of them.
