1. At least one of his parents was an American citizen.

Anyone born to an American citizen is considered "native born", which is why even if Obama had been born in Kenya, he'd still have been born a citizen, and eligible to be President. Same with John McCain who was born in the Canal Zone.

Ironically, my son was born in Kenya... If he ever runs for President, he may have to deal with this.

McCain's legal ability to run for President, and while no one did file any kind of a suit, I suspect any such would not go anywhere. Because if you're born to someone with American citizenship, then you're a born citizen, pure and simple. And can run for President.

Bringing this up does not reflect well on DU.

that the citizenship laws used to have some sort of residency requirement for the mother. The birthers claimed that Obama was born in Kenya and because his mother had not spent enough time in the U.S. prior to his birth, that he is not 'native born'.

That law was changed between the time of Obama's birth and Cruz' birth.

residency, or age requirement for the mother. The birther idiots also try to claim that because his mother was only 19 when he was born he wasn't entitled to citizenship. Wrong, wrong, wrong.

There never was any such law. Period. Cruz is a full citizen himself, regardless of having been born in Canada.

Black guy allegedly born in Kenya (even if it's a lie) to a US citizen parent = ape shittery

White guy actually born in Canada or Panama = OK

There are two ways to be a US citizen:

1. You are either born a citizen, or

2. You become one by immigration.

Ted Cruz is a US citizen by birth.

with a naturalization process.

I think the procedure for Americans born abroad is that the parents have to register the birth with an American consulate/embassy within a specific time frame. Generally by filling out some forms and getting a U.S. birth certificate along with the host country's birth certificate/record(if any).

I think there are exceptions, as always, birth certificates may not be required if other, reliable means of determining parentage and/or birth place can be determined, such as hospital/medical records, etc. Also the time frame may be more of a suggestion than a hard rule.

Haven't looked up all the procedures.
