This prying began after a contentious March 24 House hearing at which Chaffetz scolded the director and the agency for its series of security gaffes and misconduct. The hearing sparked anger inside the agency.
The Chaffetz file, contained in the restricted database, had been peeked at by about 45 Secret Service agents, some of whom shared it with their colleagues in March and April,
Secret Service has been an agency of screw ups for a long time, the Director, Clancy, has been trying to clean it up, and he hired Assistant Director Edward Lowery
in attempt to clean up the agency,
but
turns out that Lowery was the one who oversaw and started the attack on Chaffetz!
Not only was Chaffetz's info openly passed around the agency, Lowery decided some "dirt" needed to be released, so they leaked he had once applied for a
Sec. Ser. position.
Excellent reporting of incident here:

This incident is one of many many showing the Secret Service is out of control and inept.

(11,119 posts)Dept of Homeland Security is one of the best funded, over-resourced and over-staffed federal agencies. Congress will not say "NO" to any budget requests made by DHS - I suspect that Congressmen of a certain political persuasion get kick-backs from DHS over-funds.
DHS is also a humongous cluster-phuck!
The agency handles Immigration Services among other things and it's way too big to be properly managed....

(135,425 posts)What the hell? Since when is releasing personal information from a secure personnel file as part of a vendetta "fair?" This Republican congressman isn't tasked with protecting POTUS -- had he been accepted to the secret service, that would have been his job, though...! How dumb--the congressman can take this info and flip it, especially if he's a straight-and-narrow, no drinking type of guy.

(24,853 posts)Chairman Chaffetz and I have worked together to help restore the Secret Service to its standing as the most elite protective agency in the world, Cummings said. Todays findings by the Inspector General go directly against this goal and are completely and utterly unacceptable and indefensible.
I don't care if it's Jason Chaffetz, Trey Gowdy, or freaking George W. Bush. The Secret Service is supposed to be bound by laws. Every American should take pause at actions like this and consider how powerless they are as individuals in the face of government employees who hold themselves above those laws. This sickens me. Too bad you think the messenger makes the message invalid. Rep. Cummings obviously understands the gravity of such shenanigans.

Second, there are few repukes more deserving than Chaffetz of having his secrets dragged out of his closet for all to see.
Third, I 'm sure these high staffers at the SS learned these underhanded tactics from the previous republican administration who may have used similar info to keep Democrats under heel....

Again, I don't care WHOSE records they are.
