Rachel Maddows opening piece tonight illustrated just how ignorant and stupid this man is, based on a his first foreign policy
roll out statements.. This guy to put it simply, seems to have the verbal skills of a 6th grader..and he was fucking reading his statements.. Im telling you, not making it up.. I dont know who wrote his stuff but there were about 6 errors which which seemed like obvious typos, however he read right through them..These typos/wrong wordings were so obvious, that it ....Well it was frightening..Really!!
Perhaps his gaff concerning Clinton today, was just a plain case of absolute stupidity..
Oh Yea, just remembered ( writing this post too quickly) He mentioned the country known to the world as Hungry?
As HUNGRIA", Yea Hungria..
This is just an amazing piece. Please if anyone can get a clip.. Please Post..

(30 posts)He might be awkward and lack gravitas but from all indications, McCarthy's strength is, he has people skills.... The ability to influence other Republicans.
However, any Speaker Of The House has to be an able orator and that first speech speaks poorly for him.
What does it mean for house Democrats? IMO, McCarthy will continue in Boehner's footsteps, trying to keep order among the crazies in the Tea Party. Hopefully as speaker, he will give Obama more respect than Boehner did.

(9,748 posts)Speaker Hastert would not let anything come to a vote that did not have enough support among Republicans to pass without a single Democratic supporter. Just because Hastert did it that way, doesn't mean his successors had/have to do it the same way. No Speaker for over 200 years before him did it that way.
And nobody holds Hastert up as a model Speaker for anyting except this one rule of his.
14 Conservative Blue Dog Democrats
46 "Moderate" New Democrats
--
60 Conservative Democrats
170 Conservative Republicans
---
230 Conservative Congress-critters
With 218 needed for a majority, he could have a governing majority in the House while ignoring:
68 Liberal Democrats
36 Tea-Party Republicans
101 who have not joined an ideological caucus

He has never really been voted into office. Gerrymandering got him elected over and over because there was no candidate challenging him and the three times there was a weak candidate in the last ten years, that candidate was not backed by the Democratic Party and only tolerated as what I think was considered a pest, sort of like Bernie. I once asked why the official local Dem party didn't put resources behind a challenger and was told by party insiders that the seat couldn't be won so, Kevin McCarthy got a free pass to Congress.
The biggest frustration I always had on my ballot was having to leave that part blank because there wasn't an opposition candidate, not even third party often. What amazed me is how he advanced so quickly in the power structure in Congress. He was Bill Thomas's golden child and heir apparent. Look to Thomas's dealing and his ties to oil and big agro to piece this one together. If he gets Speaker, they need to give him a coronation not a gavel.
Edited to correct error.
Thanks for the heads up on the local level..

(78,249 posts)We now have a bipartisan commission drawing the districts like Iowa has. So why isn't there competition in his new district?

(75,480 posts)However, the candidates who have run against him are weak and the party doesn't do much to back them because the PTB in the different official local Democrats don't believe they are winners. Go figure that one out. I worked on the 2006 campaign for the Democrat opposing him but he won 70% of the vote. It was there that I found out the Democratic Party was lukewarm toward Sharon Beery's candidacy because they felt it was a losing seat.
In 2008 and 2010 he ran unopposed.
In 2012 after the end of gerrymandering, a weak independent candidate ran against him and again McCarthy got 73% of the vote.
In 2014 it seems, although I no longer voted in that district, he pretty much ran unopposed against a write in candidate.
Really, he has never had a strong Democrat run against him so he pretty much has skated in free with Koch Bros. and other oil industry money backing him like his predecessor Congressman Bill Thomas.

Although the wikipedia page is a bit messy, it does show what the races were about or I probably should say non-races.

Also a correction to my original post, it has been in the last ten years not fifteen years that he has run pretty much unopposed which is why I said he should get a coronation, not a gavel.
