House Democrats Back Away From GOP Attack On Elizabeth Warren's Agency

Wall Street watchdogs are worried about several Dem defections.

UPDATE: After pressure from Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and former House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank, Democrats on Wednesday overwhelmingly voted against a bill to hamstring the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Reps. David Scott (D-Ga.) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) were the only Democrats voting in favor, joined by every Republican present at the markup. Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.), who had previously spoken in support of the bill, said he was casting "a reluctant no" vote during the roll call.

Rep. Denny Heck (D-Wash.) had been attempting to hash out an amendment that would bring additional Democrats on board, but did not ultimately introduce any language.

EARLIER:

WASHINGTON -- Several House Democrats are preparing to join a GOP assault on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau -- the agency designed by Sen. Elizabeth Warren to defend households from predatory lending.

Republicans hope to hamstring the CFPB by replacing its director with a bipartisan five-member commission. Bank lobbyists have advocated the change for years, hoping to tie up rulemaking and enforcement actions with red tape and disputes between commissioners. Under CFPB Director Richard Cordray, the agency has forced companies to return billions of dollars in ill-gotten gains to consumers.

LOVE Senator Warren's clarity of speech.

Better by far than the HufPo's misleading headline here. Note that House DEMOCRATS OVERWHELMINGLY VOTED AGAINST this GOP attempt to hamstring Warren's Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

The story here is that several Democrats apparently in Big Finance's lucrative pockets have "backed away" and did not vote for with the GOP. Hopefully they'll continue to back their butts right out of those pockets.

I also love that a particular favorite, Barney Frank, is still heavily involved even though he's left Congress. I remember a Nobel-prize-winning economist once saying that Frank was one of three (3!) members of Congress whom he felt had a really good understanding of economics.

anything now?? He left Congress and is now doing lots of push back on BERNIE! Talking about how he's never been a good legislature and most Democrats ignore him!

Yes, they are ignoring him, but NOT for the reason BARNIE says! The supposed Liberal is a big supporter of Hillary and has been very vocal about it. He's carrying a LOT of water for her, so I no longer think of him as a Liberal! He talked the talked the talk when he was in Congress, but NOW doesn't walk the walk! He's said some VERY negative things about Bernie lately.

I must be missing something here, but BARNIE Frank isn't in Congress anymore. Too many of our Democrats must have gotten the word/message from DWS!! I really believe this and seriously think they want BERNIE to go away as soon as possible! I suppose by talking down about him is only the beginning, I think there's much more to come!

My respect for so many Democrats is pretty much gone! Done and over with! I need to remain a Dem to vote in the FL primary, but I'm going to have to re-evaluate if I want to remain a Democrat depending on how far to the right they're willing to go!

I can't support Third Way/DLC, I have to BELIEVE my Party is working for "we the people" and are willing to fight for us. I'm sitting on the fence right now and can't support the likes of Debbie Wasserman Schultz! Was flabbergasted when she was elected the head of DNC. She's very transparent about who she supports and is unwilling to listen to millions of fellow Democrats. She's working from the Repuke play book IMO!

Disgusting to me.

But this is a story about Senator Elizabeth Warren. Now, I'm confused. Are you saying they should include Bernie is this story also?

I was confused as to who it was you were talking about. I see what you're saying, guess the two names are so much alike. I could still be confused.

As for BARNIE Frank, I'm not very happy with him these days because he most definitely is making his voice known about how BERNIE is unelectable and how he didn't work with Congress or was able to pass legislation. I've heard him on talk shows and I think there are several threads here that comment on his Great Support of Hillary.

Don't want to go on about this, but Barnie ALWAYS talked the Liberal talk, and was one who was attacked on many occasions because of his views. Which I thought were much more like Bernie's than Hillary's.

Democrats are walking in lock step to ignore Bernie as much as possible, but to see Barnie doing this upsets me very, very much.

that was the largest expansion of Social Security benefits of our time so far. Money that was being kept from people unjustly is now rightfully theirs. The money the straight culture deprived millions of people of was not 'jack shit' and it is not 'jack shit' now that they are getting what is theirs.
That sort of discrimination directly created economic inequality. Two couples, alike in all ways save one is same sex, each having a spouse die, one would get survivor benefits the other would not. Income inequality directly created by law and eventually undone by people seeking social justice.

I'm not at all convinced of your authoritative nature in this area.
