After falling behind Fox News and CNN in the ratings, the liberal leaning MSNBC has struggled to rebound. While the network has shifted to a more centrist position, it appears one of the most popular liberal hosts in the channel's history could be making a comeback.
MSNBC started to make changes in the summer, dropping "The Ed Show," "Now with Alex Wagner," and "The Cycle," and replacing their mid day opinion shows with a more traditional news format. Veteran news anchor Brian Williams, and host of "Meet the Press," Chuck Todd, have also returned to the network to provide a more balanced approach. With these changes also comes the possibility that the network is not done fine-tuning their brand. According to Mediaite on Oct. 6, Keith Olbermann could be returning to the front of the camera.
The report notes that NBC News President Andy Lack is set to meet with Olbermann in an attempt to bring the popular host back to MSNBC. The current prime time lineup starts at 8 p.m. with "All in with Chris Hayes." Despite winning an Emmy this earlier this year, the show anchored by Chris Hayes has been a ratings disappointment and the network is looking at an alternative to fill the time slot. Olbermann most recently worked for ESPN, hosting "Olbermann" until earlier this summer, and would be available to return to MSNBC.
Olbermann had previously hosted "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" on MSNBC from March 2003 until Jan. 2011, after getting into disagreements with network executives. If Olbermann returns to the 8 p.m. time slot, he would be followed by "The Rachel Maddow show" at 9 p.m., and "The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell" in the 10 p.m. hour.

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.
Hit it.

Like all the other soggy-bread - middle of the roaders they have filling in these days?
They got rid of all the almost liberals they had..
It probably irks the hell out of them that they cannot ditch Chris Hayes just yet because of his Emmy
I seriously doubt that Keith is even interested in coming back..unless he's broke and they offer him lots of money

(23,946 posts)Although I guess you could call Vlad the Impaler "liberal leaning" compared to Atilla the Hun, since now the definition of "liberal" in the American corporate owned mass media is anything to the left of Attila.

(9,314 posts)There is nothing I would love more than to be able to turn on MSNBC and see Olbermann there again, so I am just going to wait to see if this story has legs.
However, I also hope they at least keep Chris Hayes on. He doesn't deserve to lose his job. Why didn't they slide him into the 7 pm slot? Chuck Todd would probably be relieved.

(12,655 posts)as much as keith provides a strong liberal voice, its wrong to bump chris hayes, who won an emmy and is also a progressive voice on a network that is purging the progressive voices. plus, olbermann will never accede to management demands to shill for their agenda, which means two or three months tops before a high profile flame out.

(4,213 posts)It is awful to think that we'd lose Chris for Keith. I think Chris does a fantastic job, and though I disagree with him on some things (I feel he is too soft in a couple of areas), he's a strong liberal voice.
I mean, really, what would we be gaining by losing Chris? Is Keith somehow MORE liberal? I don't think so. The only difference would be one of tone, and well... as you point out...
I have three favorite MSNBC Hosts: Chris, Rachel, and MHP.
I'm so-so on Lawrence (I think he's a better guest than a host), and my favorite "straight news" (no pun intended) Host is Thomas Roberts.
I like some of the others as well, such as Alex and Joy.
Honestly, if I was going to re-hire Keith, I would knock off Lawrence, or I would put him on with a new format on the weekends. If it were to go on the weekends, I would knock off Up with Steve, and pair Keith with two other strong aggressive liberals, and do a format similar to Morning Joe.

(12,655 posts)just louder about his liberal ness. I like the idea of bumping Lawrence to put Keith at 10 PM if they were going to do it. His rather intense approach might work better later in the evening.
i was disappointed but not surprised that joy reids show was taken away. she is truly one of the smartest analysts that network has, and she does a great job of presenting her position without being too partisan, even though she is clearly a liberal. and her instant recall of history in general and political history blows my mind.
very interesting idea about the possibility of Keith being on with other people as cohosts. I have seen him interact with Matthews and others when they were doing political coverage, and he seems to do well with it. And having other people around him might keep his temper in check, at least while he's on the air.
but yeah, I'd really hate to see Chris Hayes get the boot.
