1. Trying to answer these w/out looking up answers

What does the word “transgender” mean?

Literally going through gender. Specifically it refers to one who possess a gender at odds with the one they were assigned at birth based upon their sex.

What is gender identity and gender expression?

Gender identity is the gender one perceives oneself as, and gender expression is how one chooses to express or display their gender through dress and mannerism.

What’s the difference between sex and gender?

Gender is a societal construct defining what is considered male and what is considered female. Sex is the phenotype and/or genotype associated with which sex chromosomes one has.

What does it mean to transition?

The process of transgender person changing the gender expression from the one society has enforced upon them, to the one that they actually are.

What do the initials FTM and MTF stand for?

Female to Male, and Male to Female

What does it mean to be “genderqueer”?

A person whose gender expression cannot be defined by the gender binary of male or female.

What is gender non-conforming?

A person whose gender expression is at odds with the one society has assigned for them.

What’s the difference between being transgender and being gay?

Transgender is a person whose gender doesn't conform with the one they were assigned at birth. Being gay, means that one is sexually attracted to members of the same gender as they are.

A transgender person can be gay, polysexual, asexual, or they could be straight. Another way of looking at it is the expression "Sexuality is about the gender one wants to go to bed with, while gender identity is about what gender one wants to go to bed as."

Is there a difference between cross-dressing and being transgender?

Yes.

Cross dressing is simply dressing up as what society perceives to be the opposite gender from one's assigned sex. Transgender is having a gender identity at odds with the one society assigned them at birth.

Crossdressing on it's own doesn't not necessarily make one transgender. A person could be crossdressing as part of a joke, or celebration or to fool someone for some reason. If these are the only reasons one is crossdressing and their perceived gender is the same as their assigned one...that person is not transgender.

However, if one crossdresses to express a part of their gender that is at odds with the one they were assigned then that person is transgender.

Is being transgender a mental disorder?

No.
