Ben Carson: “Children Raised By Single Parents End Up Poor And Become Criminals”

http://dcpols.com/ben-carson-children-raised-by-single-parents-end-up-poor-and-become-criminals/

Ben Carson, GOP presidential candidate, calling for a focus on families with “traditional, intact values,” said Wednesday that not “every lifestyle is exactly of the same value,” and attacked what he called the “p.c. police.”

“We have got to stop paying attention to the ‘p.c. police,’ who say every lifestyle is exactly of the same value,” Carson said in a radio interview with Sirius XM. “No, it’s not of the same value. It is very clear that intact, traditional families with traditional, intact values do much better in terms of raising children. So let’s stop pretending that everything is of equal value.”

Carson, a retired neurosurgeon, argued that children born out of wedlock or raised by single parents are tied to higher rates of poverty and crime. “We need to face the fact that when young girls have babies out of wedlock, most of the time their education ends with that first baby,” Carson said. “And those babies are four times as likely to grow up in poverty, end up in the penal system or the welfare system. You know, I’m not making this stuff up. That’s well-documented. That’s a problem.”

Carson has continually railed against what he sees as a decline in traditional values and family structures, particularly when discussing problems facing the black community. He said during a visit to New York’s Harlem in August that to address urban violence, “we need to be talking about, ‘How do we instill values into people again?’ And those are family and faith.”

So I guess he frittered away all that neurosurgeon money AND has a past we don't know about!

my dear skittles ya just couldn't make this stuff up

Early life
Carson was born in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Sonya (née Copeland) and Robert Solomon Carson, a Seventh-day Adventist minister.[4] Both his parents came from rural Georgia.[4] The results of a DNA test on the television series African American Lives estimated his ancestry as 20% European and 80% African, including ancestors within the Makua people.[5] His parents divorced when he was eight, and he and his ten-year-old brother Curtis were raised by their mother.[6]

His political opinions don't come from any study of the issues or facts. They come from his belief system first and foremost.

but screw you guys I'm saying it anyways. It isn't politically incorrect to use empty phrases like traditional values. Instead it is amazingly politically normal. It means nothing, has no value, and makes you sound like an empty suit.

If he valued preventing young women from having babies out of wedlock he'd support planned parenthood, sex education ins schools, and massive $ support for children and mothers. Instead it is just lip service to the male oriented society.

Although Ben Carson's single mom did, what many would say is, a good job raising him he almost messed up his life. Some might say Carson has a problem blaming himself for having almost thrown away his chance at a good life. From what I have read Carson had a really good mom. According to Biography.com and Carson himself, his mom pushed him and his brother really hard to do well in school and educate themselves. She restricted their TV time and required them to read two books a week and write book reports. His mother along with a number of teachers helped him do well in school and eventually he attended Yale University.

Despite what his mom and his teachers did Carson had violent outbursts. According to Biography.com, Carson once attacked his mom with a hammer after an argument over his clothes. On another occasion, Carson and another kid got into a fight over a locker and the other kid ended up with a head injury. Finally, Carson almost killed a guy over an argument about radio stations. It has been said that the only things that saved the friend was that his belt buckle broke Carson's knife. After his friend survived, Carson went on to Yale University, medical school, and became a neurosurgeon.

Carson should stop criticizing single parent homes and start saying parents should push their children to do well in school. Carson should tell both single parent homes and two parent homes to prevent their children from watching TV, require them to read books, and require them to write on a daily basis. He should also encourage teachers and members of all communities to take an interest in the kids in the community and try to encourage them to stay out of gangs and trouble and get good educations. It seems that is what actually helped Carson become the successful person he is today.

Both Ben and his brother experienced difficulty in school. Ben fell to the bottom of his class, and became the object of ridicule by his classmates. He developed a violent and uncontrollable temper, and was known to attack other children at the slightest provocation. The poverty he lived in and the difficult times he experienced in school seem to exacerbate the anger and rage.

Determined to turn her sons around, Sonya limited their TV time to just a few select programs and refused to let them go outside to play until they'd finished their homework. She was criticized for this by her friends, who said her boys would grow up to hate her. But she was determined that her sons would have greater opportunities than she did.

She required them to read two library books a week and give her written reports, even though with her poor education, she could barely read them. She would take the papers and pretend to carefully review them, scanning over the words and turning the pages, before placing a checkmark at the top of the page to show her approval.

snip

Despite his academic successes, Ben Carson still had a raging temper that translated into violent behavior as a child. One time he tried to hit his mother with a hammer because she disagreed with his choice of clothes. Another time, he inflicted a major head injury on a classmate in a dispute over a locker. In a final incident, Ben nearly stabbed to death a friend after arguing over a choice of radio stations.

The only thing that prevented a tragic occurrence was the knife blade broke on the friend's belt buckle. Not knowing the extent of his friend's injury, Ben ran home and locked himself in the bathroom with a Bible. Terrified by his own actions, he started praying, asking God to help him find a way to deal with his temper. He found salvation in the book of Proverbs in a passage that went, "Better a patient man than a warrior, a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city."

26. Truth be told...

where I grew up at (a poor city in Metro Detroit) there were a lot of single-parent households in the project that I lived in, mostly single mothers. I can't speak for EVERY single mother that lived in that 3 story building, but I can say that there was a lot of crime and a lot of issues with child negligence and molestation in that particular building (which has since been torn down, thank god). Single parent households are tough to grow up in, no doubt, especially for a boy living without a birth father.

BUT, Carson is wrong in saying that every single parent households produce criminals at a higher rate.

I've seen my cousins and my aunt struggle without their dad around and my aunt working up to 16 hours, 5 days a week, to save up enough to move to a better city, send my cousins to good schools, and make sure that food was on the table. She did all of this by herself for nearly 25 years until my younger cousin was 18 and off to Wayne State. My aunt wasn't some hoe who fucked around and had kids because she was "lazy and wanted to live off the government"; her man (I refuse to call him an "uncle&quot raped her and she ended up carrying triplets (my cousins) before he was convicted of another crime and sent to the pokey. I cannot fathom what kind of hell my cousins would have gone through with a monster like that in their house who didn't contribute shit.

So yes, some single parent households aren't ideal for kids, but neither are double parent households. It's about single situations, not the rule. Some criminals come from the ghetto with a single mom or dad that gave zero fucks about raising their kids...but there are other criminals who came from rich yuppie areas where Biff and Muffy spoiled them rotten. So Carson needs to gtfo with this broadbrushing bullshit and actually come up with a "solution" instead!
