News of an Idaho State University associate professor shooting himself in the foot has gone national.

The Tuesday incident must have been embarrassing for the chemistry prof. It happened in the middle of a classroom full of students while he was giving a lecture.

The good news is that the wound to the professor’s foot was minor and he was treated and released that day at Portneuf Medical Center. It’s also extremely fortunate for both the professor and the university that no one else was injured.

But it’s concerning this incident happened during the second week of fall classes at ISU — the first semester in which some students and faculty can carry guns on campus.

It’s fruitless to debate the merits of Idaho’s new guns on campus policy. Those arguments for and against were held during past sessions of the Idaho Legislature. And despite pleas from the police and university administrators and faculty, state lawmakers gave the green light to make it legal to bring a gun onto the campus of any Idaho college or university as long as the gun owner has an enhanced concealed carry permit.

The professor who shot himself this past week at ISU had such a permit along with the associated training.

Still, he had the gun in his pocket where it somehow fired during class.

he probably applied to the school in Australia as an option. We don't know for sure, but he probably could have applied to several universities after the legislation was proposed. Laws also usually don't go into effect the next day after they are passed. There is usually a period of time before they go into effect (in fact it is Jan 1, 2016). What I'm saying is from the time the legislation was proposed to the time he wrote the letter could have been several months, certainly long enough to apply at other schools. Given that the Texas legislature (both sides) are Republican and they have a Republican governor, it was a pretty sure bet that the legislation would pass.

I am also a professor and hold a doctoral degree. Personally I would not work on a campus that allowed open-carry. Thankfully I'll never live nor visit the state of Texas.

Many years ago I was in Subic Bay Philippines. One afternoon I walked into one of the many bars there for a beer. A girl sat beside me and asked if I wanted some company. "No Thanks, I have a girl friend." She: Which bar she work?" Me: "She doesn't work in a bar." She: "Oh, a street walker!"

Gunners seem to have the same world view. The idea that the world and therefore they, simply would not exist without a gun. Without their gun they would be nothing. Without their guns their lives have no meaning. They would be creatures void of form.

Moving 40 years in time.... I now teach engineering at an adult education school. The vast majority of students benefit from the classes and go on to have better lives as a result.

But....

I've had people tell me that if they don't pass the final exam they will lose their job and their family become homeless. These are well-founded fears. I've had people scream at me. I've had people write profanity laden rants on their class evaluation forms. I've had Veterans with PTSD make my class hell for weeks on end. And we get a lot of gun nuts who tell me they feel naked because of the law in Florida does not allow open carry. But since I haven't actually been shot, I have no reason to be worried, right?

One Professor leaving will not destroy a state's education system. But it does represent an incremental transfer of knowledge and skill to another country. And this is the insidiousness of the gun lobby. One thin slice at a time they make the country worse.

When I quit this job I will not state "fear of getting shot" as a reason in my letter. Umpqua Community College was in a CCW state. There were 6 "good guys with guns" there when the shooting took place.

It is well within the purview of a professor to cancel a class for any reason. Once you have tenure you also can not easily be fired on the spot. You can not replace an academic like you do an assembly line worker. Each of them bring a unique perspective and knowledge to the university and they all compete to get and retain the best of them.
Getting rid of a tenured professor who is a strong academic is something that the board would never be able to do given that most other colleagues will think alike, including those sitting on the board , the university could not "purge" professors who do not bend to the will of the NRA whether or not there is a CCW law in that state. I definitely would not allow somebody with a weapon in my class. Now, of course I do not have to face this since the state where I teach does not yet allow weapons in the university.

If professor Peterson was to push it, I am not sure the chancellor would be able to stop him unless he wants to destroy the reputation of his campus. Universities are made by having strong academics teaching and doing their research there. They are the one bringing the money via research grants. Now, I do not know the particular situation at UC Boulder. However, a fight between the administration and prominent professors never end well for both parties since academics would not have any problems moving to another university which is more accommodating as evidenced in this article.

I am sick of gun advocates wanting to impose their values on others. Many are uncomfortable with having weapons on campus (students and profs) and if gun owners had any decency they would refrain from carrying at the university.

True story. Several years ago the last student still working in my general zoology lab approached me after the other students had all left. He explained that he was a former Los Angeles police officer and alluded to some sort of tangential connection to law enforcement where I work, at the other end of the state. He told me that as a former cop he always carries a gun, and wanted me to know that I could count on him to "take someone out" if I needed that. I politely thanked him and wished him a good afternoon. He never mentioned it again.

First of all, that there is sudden concern about "the destruction of higher education," when Democrats have been complicit for a few decades in the destruction of "lower" education.

Secondly, that the destruction is suddenly important when it's about guns, but wasn't important enough to make a priority when it has been about privatization.

That said, I certainly do not support people carrying weapons on any school campus.

I was just asked that by a local last week, who wanted to thank me for my service to students, and then asked me if anyone on our campus is allowed to carry to protect us (in the wake of the Roseburg shooting.)
