Alabama’s Civil Rights Memorial

Last edited Mon Oct 12, 2015, 05:34 PM - Edit history (1)

One of Maya Lin’s greatest pieces, her Civil Rights Memorial, is in Montgomery, Alabama. It is a heartfelt work of genius.

The state of Alabama has recently shut down more than 30 Department of Motor Vehicles Offices, in majority black areas, to make it difficult for black people to get driver’s licenses which are a necessity for voting.

Alabama is currently in full Jim Crow mode.

Maya Lin’s Civil Rights Memorial, and the people of Alabama, are being disgraced by the state in which that Memorial stands. My disgust knows no bounds.

If only they could, oh, I dont know, TAKE OVER towns or cities and FIRE the duly elected officials, wouldnt that be sweet.

Or, if only they could make it next to impossible to vote if you are not white middle class.

The 2013 law eliminated same-day voter registration, cut a full week of early voting, barred voters from casting a ballot outside their home precinct, ended straight-ticket voting, and scrapped a program to pre-register high school students who would turn 18 by Election Day. It also included the nation’s strictest voter ID requirement, which the state somewhat loosened a few weeks before the trial began, to allow alternate forms of ID.

a gigantic tarp should be thrown over the Memorial until the racism/bigotry/ignorance ends. And then I realized it will never end. It will only, someday, become outnumbered.

May that Memorial be a beacon.
