A 10-year-old Council Bluffs girl said Monday that she wouldnt have been hit by a train if she hadnt been in such a hurry to get to a cousins birthday party.
Hannah Dreher is recovering at the Nebraska Medical Center after being struck Sunday by a Union Pacific train about 12:30 p.m. near South 13th Street and Fourth Avenue. The girl underwent brain surgery and appears to be headed to a full recovery, said her mother, Tracy Dreher.
Im lucky to be talking or, really, alive right now, Hannah said during an interview in the intensive care unit. I hope (other kids learn) trains are pretty serious, and theyre not as safe as they look, and that (everyone) should be more careful around them.
The fifth-grader spoke with clarity, although her voice was scratchy. Her head, arms and legs were covered with bandages.
