A 10-year-old Council Bluffs girl said Monday that she wouldn’t have been hit by a train if she hadn’t been in such a hurry to get to a cousin’s birthday party.

Hannah Dreher is recovering at the Nebraska Medical Center after being struck Sunday by a Union Pacific train about 12:30 p.m. near South 13th Street and Fourth Avenue. The girl underwent brain surgery and appears to be headed to a full recovery, said her mother, Tracy Dreher.

“I’m lucky to be talking or, really, alive right now,” Hannah said during an interview in the intensive care unit. “I hope (other kids learn) trains are pretty serious, and they’re not as safe as they look, and that (everyone) should be more careful around them.”

The fifth-grader spoke with clarity, although her voice was scratchy. Her head, arms and legs were covered with bandages.
