on Canadian TV (NTV). Coverage was refreshing. There was none of the typical vitriol we see daily on the US corporate media.
Everyone should listen to Trudeau's victory speech. By the way the last time I saw such a handsome articulate man win elections was November 2012 but for some reason last night was more like 2008 for Canada.- they're a gorgeous family.
By the way that was a whipping - 184 seats and 54% of the seats. The magnitude of hte victory spoke volumes about the agenda of the Canadian newspapers.
Congrats Canucks!!! You did it!!!!

As for Harper...

(268,994 posts)so I used to visit often and you know I love politics and political gossip. Margaret was years younger than Pierre. Funny that you mention the Kennedy's because she had an affair with Ted Kennedy. They divorced. She was a genuine 'flower power lady'.

Truth be told Margaret was way to young to be married to the leader of any country.

(22,165 posts)As the crowd chanted his name, Trudeau said the Liberals won because "we listened."
"We beat fear with hope, we beat cynicism with hard work. We beat negative, divisive politics with a positive vision that brings Canadians together," he said.
"Most of all we defeated the idea that Canadians should be satisfied with less, and that better isn't possible. My friends, this is Canada, where better is always possible."

Journalist Andrew Coyne has stepped down as the National Posts editor of editorials and comment after what he called a professional disagreement over the papers endorsement of the Conservative Party in todays election.
Coyne explained his decision in a series of tweets posted Monday morning, saying he resigned to protect my reputation and to preserve my editorial freedom as a columnist.
However, he said he will continue to write a column for the newspaper.
Postmedia executives and I had a professional disagreement, Coyne wrote. Their view was that the publication of a column by the editorial page editor dissenting from the Posts endorsement of the Conservatives would have confused readers and embarrassed the paper.
I dont see public disagreement as confusing, Coyne tweeted. I see it as honest. Readers, in my view, are adults & understand that adults can disagree.
Coyne tweeted that his resignation from his editorial board was effective immediately.

Justin Trudeau, the son of former prime minister Pierre Trudeau, will be Canadas next leader, after a dramatic federal election that ended the divisive reign of the Conservative prime minister, Stephen Harper.
The Liberal party won a surprise majority, taking 184 of the 338 seats in parliament with representatives in every province and roughly 40% of the popular vote.
After rousing his party from third in the polls to first place on voting day, Trudeau promised sunny ways for all Canadians.
Trudeaus victory speech omitted any mention of his flamboyant father Pierre who led Canada from 1968 to 1984 with one brief interruption. In Canada better is always possible, a hoarse but jubilant Trudeau told cheering supporters at Liberal headquarters in Montreals Queen Elizabeth hotel.
People are sick of right wing government in Canada and around the world.

(32 posts)The Liberal Party supported the Conservatives' Bill C-51 (draconian surveillance / unaccountable secret police law), will sign the TPP, support building the Keystone XL pipeline, etc. It's as if Canada has just elected Third-Way Democrats.

(3,795 posts)Their majority would probably be short-lived. Wouldn't that make this Trudeau kind of like Evan Bayh (in relation to their fathers)?
I can't imagine Canadians accepting that without consequences for the political party that ushers in those policies.
Of course, they would deserve to lose their majority if they push through those policies as well.
I wonder if that would allow the Conservatives to regain power or would the Canadians go further left.
Hopefully if Canadians make enough noise the Liberals will not support these policies. Good luck Canada!!

(22,651 posts)With global warming, Canada's climate will improve. Agriculture too will improve while Americas over grazed, "public lands" with almost free Corporate leases- turns into a dry desert wasteland. Increasing USA droughts and wildfires.
Canada's Government controls 80% of their tree covered lands and they're good stewards of that land.
Already the NW passage is ice free and will be a major shipping port.
In near future-Canada will not even have to pipeline their shale oil to Texas to refine for Asian-pacific 'customers'. They want TPP and customers for their abundant resources, many like trees are renewable resources.

(5,562 posts)Here on Vancouver island, the BC govt signed thousands of acres of crown land over to Timber west, and they are in the process of clear cutting it and shipping the raw logs to China. There is very little old growth left. If you fly over the island it looks devastated.
Very few jobs out of this filthy deal on top of it.
