Bar that served the ‘N*****ita’ closes its doors, quits social media

by Jamie Peck / October 28, 2015

As we reported Tuesday, Confederate-themed fun times bar General Beauregard’s in Athens, Georgia, is experiencing serious blowback from the community as well as the internet after it came to light that they were serving a watermelon-flavored shooter called the “N*****ita.” Now it seems they’ve closed their doors and gone into hiding, at least temporarily ...

After amassing numerous indignant one-star reviews, the General Beauregard’s Facebook page has been deleted. They deleted their Twitter account, too. Its Yelp page, however, remains active. It’s worth noting that multiple people left reviews prior to this recent bit of exposure that painted the bar as less than welcoming to anyone who didn’t fit a certain, uh, type ...

Moral of the story: If you are going to open a bar, you’d be wise not to make it a celebration of the South’s secession from the North for the purposes of preserving “their beneficent and patriarchal system of African slavery.” But if you must have a Confederate-themed bar, definitely don’t name drinks anything involving the n-word ...

General Beauregard’s is a bar in Athens, Georgia, known for its sweet tea, live country music, and brazen, nauseating dedication to Confederacy. Many people readily believed an image of a drink menu offering a “N*****ita” shooter circulating on social media late Monday night came from General Beauregard’s menu. However, the bar’s owner says the viral image is a hoax ...

When asked about the special’s appearance on the menu, considering the fact that there seemed to be only a single image circulating through multiple sources, the tipster elaborated: “Apparently, this drink is not on the public menu. However, the image is taken from a behind-the-bar employee cheat sheet. An employee at a local copy shop was asked to laminate 5 copies of this sheet and kept one for himself” ...

... General Beauregard’s owner Daniel Simmons ... continued, denying General Beauregard’s offers menus to customers at all, let alone racist ones—their drink specials are listed on a chalkboard—and insisting the bar has never offered this particular special, saying it is “not something we have ever served to customers or advertised and would never be approved by ownership.”

Simmons did not specifically deny the existence of a bar “cheat sheet” ...

Student body is 75% white and only 7% AA; there are perhaps 65 fraternities and sororities, including Kappa Alpha Order and Sigma Alpha Epsilon, so often noted for their "confederate sympathies"

Here's an old LTTE:

... I am very proud of the display of the flag on the fraternity and sorority houses along S. Milledge Avenue. It is good to know people are proud of their Southern and Confederate heritage in spite of the whining special interest groups. It's time everyone realizes that this is the South, Georgia was a Confederate state and that is nothing to be ashamed of ...
