My hubby is an evangelical and a fiscal conservative, but also an environmentalist. (Yes, they do exist. He's a hiker and former Cub Scout pack assistant.) We have been watching the debates together. Last night I clenched my teeth and sat through the latest Clown Car debate, and he was laughing an awful lot of the time, mostly at the fiasco of too many people talking at once, but also at the moderators and their questions. He thought Kasich came across as the sensible one this time, but overall, now that he has has seen multiple debates, between both parties he thinks Secretary Clinton is most up to the job. (He voted Green in '08. May have voted for Obama's second term. Don't recall.)
FIL is a an evangelical minister. Doesn't seem to care for Trump. Very concerned about seniors issues and poverty, but unfortunately his feelings about social issues keep him looking at the Republicans. When last we spoke a couple of weeks ago, he was thinking Bush might win it. Did not care for Trump. Never mentioned anyone else by name.
Not sure what BIL/SIL are thinking, but conservative evangelical Facebook friends seem to be for Carson for now.

(1,644 posts)Most of the politically conservative ones I have spoken to are not enthusiastic about anyone in the current GOP lineup. They think Trump is a joke and is not serious about becoming president. Christie has zero chance at the nomination, since most Republicans view him as an Obama pal. While none of them are worried about Bernie Sanders, most of them laugh about Elizabeth Warren and hope she will run. But, they ALL hate Hillary Clinton. I don't sense a lot of enthusiasm from either my conservative or progressive acquaintances. On, both sides, though, there seems to be a desperation not to lose this election.

(1,644 posts)But, no one anywhere seems really happy with their choices this time around. Die-hards and true believers on the left and right are bound to be disappointed. Barack Obama can't run again, and Ronald Reagan isn't coming back.

(1,241 posts)swear by Trump. I have a 20 dollar bet with one who guarantees Trump will be President. The other is a union pensioner with zero health insurance. Too young for SS. Has one foot in the grave and one on a banana peel. But loves him some Trump.

(31,396 posts)One lives in Jersey and is a small business owner. The other is a CFO of a private
company in Tennessee. She is perpetually complaining about the employees
at her company who can't/won't do their jobs (she has to babysit them) and are busy fighting with each
other all the time. I have refrained from saying--numerous times--that
if the company owner would pay decent salaries perhaps he'd attract competent,
professional people to do the jobs.
They're both people whose lives revolve around money, so it doesn't surprise
me that they like Trump.

(5,364 posts)My father and his circle of friends are raging RW teabagger arseholes; the archetype angry white guy ( or girls ) Foxbots. Extraordinarily parochial in their defense of "trickle-down" economics, socially conservative ( though not evangelical ) curmudgeons all who think that, while every generation think the country is going to pot and the younger people are the ruination of it, think that this time it's really true in this case. Big-time believers in "American exceptionalism".
They really really like Trump, and laugh and scoff at those who say he's be dangerous in the white house.
They absolutely swoon over Carson. "A real black president" they say. No kidding! I think it's just a stratagem just so they say that they dislike Obama not because he's black.
The others I work with are low-information "god & guns" types. Total "I got mine" types who are useful idiots to the plutocrats. No clear favorite, as long as it's not HRC.
Last; my fiancee: We don't talk politics much but she seems to be a latent little fascist. Ultimate low-info type who forms her opinions from a Facebook "wall". Loves Christie, but harmonious peace be damned; I flatly tell her he's an asshole.

(5,364 posts)What gives me hope is that she only forms opinions through her gut and is socially liberal. She thinks I'm center-right and she knows I'm very well read and will listen to me. All that needs to be done is to wean her off of shallow blather she gets her "facts" from. The only thing that really drives me up a wall about her is her visceral near worship of the military ( alright, "the troops" ) and of law-enforcement.
I hope I can enlighten her..

(78,249 posts)I put this very question to him in July. You should have heard the way he growled the name "Donald Trump"! Never did get a straight answer from him, though; it may well be that all and sundry of the clown car passengers are too far right for his relatively moderate self. This was before Kasich announced, though.

(4,461 posts)... a couple of well off conservative friends are big Rubio supporters. They are afraid Trump will fracture the party and don't trust him. They think Carson is an idiot.
Another good friend likes Kasich and Rubio. He and I talk a lot. He also actually likes what he hears from Sanders. He said he'd never vote for him, but wouldn't be too upset if he were elected.
I really don't know anyone who supports Trump - odd in that I'm in the South. There's this one guy I know and see regularly who is an avid Tea Partier, but he's not vocal about who he's supporting for Prez. I really think he doesn't know yet.
One thing I will tell you that is abundantly clear. They ALL HATE Sec Clinton with the fire of a thousand suns. Someone up thread said they have been conditioned to hate her for 30 years, and I think that is true. It's amusing. I can talk politics civilly with all of them, joking and kidding ... but when Clinton's name comes up, their tone immediately turns hateful, and it's not funny to them anymore.

(4,522 posts)They only care about one thing - making fun of libs. Trump is their man. They say the election itself is a joke, it's already been decided, so their opinion and vote mean nada. Yes please, stay home from the polls and binge watch The Duggars or Duck Dynasty. Honestly I thought some would go for Carson, but it looks like even the fundies in OK don't want him in office. He might actually make law that would banish their favorite sins. They would rather complain about how they are being persecuted.

(36,063 posts)Her reasoning for Carson is seems to be that stories of his life conform to her belief in the greatness of 'overcoming' rough beginnings. This is very consistent with conservative notions that success is a choice and is "up to each of us".
I am not sure what her anybody-but-Clinton attitude is based on. Although I don't think she watches much television she seems quite knowledgeable and thereby well connected to literature of Americans for Prosperity. She has 'worshiped" Paul Ryan for a decade or so.
None of her positions seem to be based on an analysis of what policies would be good for the whole country or even her. Rather, her opinions seem to be based on emotional reactions to, what are imo, mythic representations of all 20-ish folks running between the two parties.
She's a 30-something with a self-reported history of regular voting.

Then next carson because they claim he is smart, you know being a famous dr and all.
The dr used to be followed by the failed HP ceo lady. But after this last round of crazy clown debates she wasn't mentioned. Come to think about it they haven't mentioned her much for sometime now.
For some reason they all have a soft spot for rubio but then I am in FL so that might be why.
Joe McCarthy's twin still gets good things said about him and some hope he can make a comeback.
And two people absolutely love "buy my diabetes cure and book" hucklebee.
They all hate jeb, say he can't win on his name and he has to show them stuff to earn their vote.
They also seem to think this years crop of clowns is a strong good group of people.
On the Dem side ....
They hate despise loathe Hillary say she is a lair and a criminal.
Of course they do not feel the bern he is a socialist.
And yes they basically watch the fake news channel 24/7 and love o reilly and were throughly pissed his book didn't win the emmy. I gloated my show won lots of awards GoT! Winter is coming baby!

(20,176 posts)It's moot though, her vote will be determined by the Democratic primary. If Hillary wins, she's voting Republican regardless who the nominee is. If Sanders wins, it'll be Sanders. If the Democratic nominee is M. O'M or anybody else, it's a toss-up on whose agenda she likes best.
It will never be a GE vote for Hillary though. I think everybody knows how much I hate Hillary...and my mom scares me with how much she hates Hillary.

(1,136 posts)When I got back from that trip, my VERY conservative boyfriend asked if I could order him a Bernie Sanders t-shirt. I looked at him waiting for the punch line. He said, no seriously. I watch the repub debate, I watched the dem debate. Bernie Sanders is the only honest person on either stage. I promptly ordered the shirt. We got it on Monday, he wore it today to the grocery store in our VERY conservative area of Richmond, VA. I'm so dang proud of him.

(2,345 posts)(my husband, the kiddo and I only moved here recently, and thank dog my office is exclusively progressive Sanders supporters), but I have to say with sadness that I have seen more than a handful of Carson bumper stickers while out and about in the Redwood Coast. (1,754 posts)My rw dad supports Trump - because he's loud and "doesn't care what he says" (he's secretly a nihilist). I've never heard him mention a policy position of Trumps, it's just a personality thing as far as I can tell.
My rw mom supports Carson for exactly the opposite reason - because he's soft-spoken. She thinks he must be smart because he was a neurosurgeon and is completely ignorant of his positions. She is always surprised when I point out some of the stupid things he's said. I'm not sure she believes me. She is a very low-information voter - all of her info comes from Fox News which she only sees occasionally (if it were up to her she would never watch the news but dad watches Fox often enough that she sees it some).
Others have mostly been split between those two but I've heard a few Rand Paul supporters also.

(4,119 posts)...speaking to (as much as possible) the conservatives in my life back when they jumped on the Obama is a muslim born in Kenya bandwagon. No point in talking to them about anything except the weather and even that is touchy since they don't acknowledge that the summers are getting hotter and winters colder.
