Authorities say an 82-year-old woman who got lost in the western New York woods while walking her dog was eventually found safe after she sent the pooch home to let her family know she needed help.
Police in East Aurora, outside Buffalo, say the woman took her mixed-breed dog for a walk late Thursday afternoon on trails in the woods near her home. Officials say she walked farther than she normally does and became lost when it turned dark.
Police say she took shelter under a tree and sent the dog home to alert her family.
After the dog showed up alone at around 7:15 p.m., the family reported the woman missing and a search was launched.
Searchers found the woman wet and cold but safe at around 9:30 p.m.

(28,120 posts)I've known many great cats too. But Dogs...well, They AreThe Best!!! Especially when you need help....
My 90yo mother recently fell and sent her Lab next door for help! Ask a kitty to do that.
I love both species though.

(63,221 posts)come to me and put her head in my lap and look up at me with this look like "are you ok?". It was so sweet and it just made me feel like there was one little being in the world who actually care about how I was feeling. Sometimes, I think that dog saved my life.

(28,120 posts)All my dogs have done that. When there are days that are overwhelming, they're there for us. Whenever I sat down with a big sigh or even gloomy, the furkid is there, head on my lap looking up with sympathetic eyes, saying "what's wrong, mom?"
Like you said, a friend who'll always love you. I imagine they've saved numerous lives, especially those of us kids who weren't always treated well.
