All-Female Flight Test Crew Asked How They Will Cope Without Make-Up Or Men In Space

On Wednesday, six Russian women began an eight-day experiment onboard a mock spacecraft to examine how an all-female crew fare with the physical, social and psychological strain of long-haul spaceflight.

The team will perform 10 scientific experiments to simulate the pressure of working on a spaceflight to the Moon and back. They will also have 1.5 hours per day of free time, where they can watch films, read and socialize.

The women, aged between 22 to 34, are Yelena Luchitskaya, Darya Komissarova, Polina Kuznetsova, Anna Kussmaul, Inna Nosikova, and Tatyana Shiguyeva – all of whom have expertise in medicine, biophysics or psychology.

What if they break a nail? What if they all have their periods at the same time? Oh, wait, that already happens when women work closely together.

I don't know. I think there will be cat fights and hair pulling. Maybe the Russians will live-stream it, and Fan Duel can make bank on it.

Geeze.

I mean, you know not one of us can pick up, let alone USE, something as complicated as a...wrench.

I'm reminded of the part from Armageddon where the Russian Cosmonaut hits the machinery to 'fix' it. Can we do the same with these people, using their heads instead of a hand to 'fix' it?

Valentina Tereshkova who at 78 years old could likely kick all of their butts.

Here's to Valentina! One bad ass astronaut, who spent nearly three days in space on Vostok 6. Back when such things were difficult.

Here's a pic:

BTW, she did that in 1963, quite a few years before Sally Ride. And she is 78 years old and apparently still going strong. She has said that she would volunteer for a one-way Mars mission. Not sure about that except to say that she apparently still has the right stuff.

Celebrate Valentina.

На посошок, Valentina!
(na pa-sa-shók)

"One for the road" or maybe for flight in her case, according to the Russian Toasts list.

ETA - this deserves a pic:

Valentina Tereshkova and NASA astronaut Catherine Coleman at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in December 2010.

No matter whether it was one way or both ways. If it was both ways, I very well may want her on the team all the more.

Valentina rules!

My best to you, Hifiguy.

My Russian is a bit rusty. It has been nearly half a century since I studied it at Michigan State. All that I remember now is the Cyrillic alphabet and a few words. And that's on a good day. I can still pronounce it, but I don't know what I am saying. Always appreciate those who retain such stuff.

Thanks .

A very brave woman (all early space explorers, I think, were uncommonly brave).

As a child, I was so disappointed that the US had no women in our space program.

Was Kim Kardashian writing this? Somebody from "Seventeen" magazine?

I suspect they'll be just fine.
