I and soooooo many others worked so damn hard on this campaign. It was TOUGH in a low turnout year, but we won by about 10 points to strengthen our landmark public financing clean elections law where candidates for state office can opt to use public financing. In our elections before the Supreme Court struck down matching funds for this in a rotten 5-4 pro-corporate vote from that side of the bench, we had over 80% of our candidates for state office running as publicly-financed candidates. Because of the corrupt members of the Supreme Court and their rotten decision which largely gutted the law (not completely but took away the matching funds provision which was so crucial), participation in Clean Elections dropped to 53% in 2014. With this referendum, passed tonight by about a ten point margin, we have restored the matching funds provision through a new mechanism that should pass even this SCOTUS's requirements, and it also increases outside advertising transparency and increases penalties for violating Maine's campaign finance laws. GOOD JOB MAINE TEAM !!
("Matching Funds" are extra public funds that "clean" candidates get if they have a non-"clean" opponent who raises private funds over a certain amount.)
We also passed two needed bonds for highway improvements and care for the elderly by overwhelming margins.
