Yale students air concerns over alleged racist frat party

BY ASSOCIATED PRESS
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH 2015

... The New Haven Register reports that the Ivy League school held a forum Wednesday night at the Afro American Cultural Center ... It followed allegations that a Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity brother turned away female minorities from a party Saturday night, saying they were only letting in white girls ...

Some questioned why the fraternity was allowed to throw the party. The fraternity has been banned from campus activities until 2016 for violating the university's sexual misconduct policy.

The fraternity hosted minstrel shows in the 1900s, “Martin Luther King Jr. trash” parties in the 1980s, and “n*****s and hoes” parties in 2010. ... the allegations harkened back to trouble earlier this year at another S.A.E. chapter, when a video of members of the University of Oklahoma chapter of S.A.E. singing a racist song on a party bus went viral. Outrage over the song, the lyrics of which suggest the fraternity would sooner lynch African Americans than admit them into S.A.E., led to the chapter shutting down and two students being expelled ...

In May, S.A.E.’s Stanford chapter was kicked out of its on-campus house indefinitely and put on probation after a university investigation found three separate incidences of misconduct: one in which its members deterred a female student from reporting a possible Title IX concern, another in which members cyberbullied and intimidated another student because they thought the student had reported a Title IX concern about the fraternity, and then several alcohol-related violations ...

In 2011, a 19-year-old sophomore student at Cornell died after he was kidnapped, bound with zip-ties and duct tape, and forced to drink as part of an S.A.E. hazing ritual. His blood-alcohol level was five times the legal limit ...
