My Great-Aunt's Poppies

Many decades ago one of my great-aunts caught a train. On board that same train was a soldier who had just returned from the fighting in Europe in WWI. They struck up a conversation and when he got off the train, he handed her some poppy seeds he had brought back with him.

My great-aunt planted them behind the main house with the other flowers. One of my most vivid memories is of that bright red burst of color when they bloomed. They are long gone but their essence is still there.

I think of them especially on November 11th.
