That takes some nerve - to run into a place where there may be bombs, active shooters, whatever.
Kudos to the cops and the medics who ran into danger.
Edited: many DUers have pointed out to me how wrong I was with my original OP. I thought that some might not want to give credit to the brave first responders. So I've changed the OP to reflect that. This is a great community, and I was wrong to think that anyone would not credit those who deserve it. Mea culpa.

They run in, towards danger, when others run out, towards safety.

Training, courage, whatever it is...I'd be happy to see them if I was being shot at.

(24,853 posts)What if someone monitoring their frequency declared some kind of emergency in order to get a large number of first responders in one place? Or worse yet, what if they actually broadcast on the frequency.

(15,882 posts)Because the murders our police commit need to be done in secret. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danziger_Bridge_shootings < others, but the list would be too long...
Not to take away from what was done here, but it isn't the typical situation, and it shouldn't be used in a knee-jerk manner to suggest policy. A tactical group could have a channel for use in such a situation, encrypted and used by only a few, (and the target won't have it) but hiding general communications like the secret police may not be a positive thing.
The more open those systems are, the better able help is able to coordinate during almost any situation. And the less the public record can be manipulated.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)that you can buy at the store... hell, I have one on my table since one of my departments has some of their feeds on those channels and some still at the 800 freqs that broadcastify feeds.
Oh and it is quite legal too.
If you have never done this and you are intimidated by the programing required... (it can be daunting), get a Uniden home patrol. They are pre-programed for the whole country.

ScreamingMeemie
(68,918 posts)I think they did a tremendous job. I also think many police officers abuse the badge, but I can do both.
cwydro
(51,308 posts)And most on DU can do both, but there are a few here who hate cops and just never see both sides.
I just wanted to give them a shout out.

(51,308 posts)There's really only three or four posters on here that are consistently anti-cop. I think most DUers are able to look at the big picture.
I'm just amazed at what they have to deal with nowadays. I still remember how we all thought how heroic they were after 9/11...then suddenly we forgot.
jeff47
(26,549 posts)This was an example of police doing their job, and doing it extremely well.
It isn't blanket hatred of police. It's hatred of police who abuse their position, and their friends who help cover it up.

Rex
(65,616 posts)I think most of us are sick of police abuse and at the same time know most cops are normal citizens like ourselves. They did a good job of stopping further bloodshed. I read the couple had tons of ammo and weapons, it could have been much worse.

(51,308 posts)I've been a member of DU for a long time.
There are certain members here who are always insulting cops. Perhaps you've seen their posts?
Really, there are three who come to mind. And that is a minority. Hence, my edit.
I'm critical of police when individuals within departments do horrible things but I understand where you're coming from in that respect.

(13,871 posts)Liberals don't hate cops; they hate laws and regimes that allow the authorities to violate rights, and suppress certain classes of people.

(2,382 posts)... it's the preponderance of homicidal malice that defines far too many of their interactions with those they're paid to protect that gets them into trouble. For the record, one of my sons is a cop. The other's in Club Fed. Go figure.

I don't think there is a one of us here who would not be dialing 911 when that kind of crap breaks loose.
I surely hope I'm never in that situation, and I don't wish it on anyone ever.
So frightening.
Laffy Kat
(16,381 posts)I never did anything remotely heroic, but I can only imagine. When I was in school for my EMT we spent half a class listening to the 911 recordings of the Aurora shooting. You know when the FRs arrived they had no idea what exactly they were dealing with and it was pretty disorganized. Then, you could hear the event unfolding through dispatch, the gravity of it. It was both horrifying and fascinating to study.

coyote
(1,561 posts)But isn't anybody disturbed by the fact that the police look more like a military organization than regularly uniformed officers. I do. Pics here:

Looking at the shotup black getaway truck, it appears that American police use more ammo per person, than all Germans in one year (German police force shot 85 bullets in 2014)
Americans have become desensitized as to how crazy over armed the police are.

(6,592 posts)We have many incredible first responders who put their lives in danger, without hesitation, every day. I honor them.
And let's not forget the officer & pastor in Colorado Springs. I haven't seen anything to confirm this, but I suspect that personally, based on his religious beliefs, he may not have been pro-choice. However, when faced with the situation at the Planned Parenthood that didn't matter to him. He realized innocent lives were at risk & he did his job to the absolute best of his abilities, even giving his own life to protect others.
What more can a human being possible give?
