General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThis is what journalists are supposed to do. Kudos to Chris Matthews.
Chris Matthews then continued as he dissected Trump's continued birtherism.
"Well, this is Trump's trump card. It is his ethnic taunt to the worst of the Obama haters. It is his willingness to argue that the President isn't really one of us. That he is on the contrary a mysterious interloper who snuck into our country, assumed an identity that wasn't his, and smuggled himself all the way to the American presidency never once being the person he claims to be. Well this is the original Trump sin back again. This is the trumped up libel that our front running candidate is willing to sell whenever he finds an audience as he did today willing to swallow it only because they hate Obama personally, hate his progressive politics, hate most of all his open tolerant world view. I have from the beginning seen Trump as a mixed bag. But this birtherism which he exhumed today is the bad he carries with him, refuses to dump, and is so willing to sell."
Matthews then went after Trumps' supporters.
"For those who applauded him today, cheered at his insinuation that the President hides himself as a defender of Islamist terrorism, I can only say this," Chris Matthews said. "You should be ashamed. None of us should applaud this 21st century McCarthyism, this cheap insinuation against a fellow American backed up by nothing but hate."

(60,074 posts)He does that all the time with politicians on both sides of the aisle. Chris is a political groupie. He gives credit where credit is due. He appreciated the political skill of Reagan, Obama, and Clinton. That is separate from an endorsement of that person's policies. Let's say it is a man crush, nothing more.

(1,309 posts)wonder why? The more attention given to republican idiots, the less attention on Hillary's positions in support of the oligarchy and the less knowledge people have that Bernie is the candidate that hold the same positions on the issues as a majority of Americans and has been fighting the oligarchy and for the people for decades. Do not be fooled, the real battle for democracy is being waged in the democratic primaries, and this side show is just to put apparent distance between Hillary and republicans although they both share the same donor bosses. The sleight of hand is hear, do not be deceived, Hillary is just another way of saying republican lite but still working for the same causes and donors as republicans-enrichment of the oligarchy.

(2,642 posts)It may be what you think Journalism is, but what is quoted there is nothing but opinion.
That, is no no better than Olielly, Hannity, or Limbaugh.
"A journalist is a person who collects, writes, or distributes news or other current information."
There is nothing there that is news or other current information. All commentary and opinion.
If anything, Tweety is a sign of what Faux News has DONE to "journalism" by making reporting the simple facts in an unbiased way, impossible.
Celebrate it if you want, but it isn't journalism.

(348 posts)"Both in Vietnam and Washington to have faith any longer in the silver linings they find in the darkest clouds. For it seems now more certain than ever, that the bloody experience of Vietnam is to end in a stalemate. To say that we are closer to victory today is to believe in the face of the evidence, the optimists who have been wrong in the past.
To say that we are mired in stalemate seems the only realistic, if unsatisfactory conclusion. On the off chance that military and political analysts are right, in the next few months we must test the enemy's intentions, in case this is indeed his last big gasp before negotiations.
But it is increasingly clear to this reporter that the only rational way out then will be to negotiate, not as victors, but as an honorable people who lived up to their pledge to defend democracy, and did the best they could.
This is Walter Cronkite. Good night."
If a journalist can call bullshit using facts,it is that journalists duty to do so.

(7,953 posts)but as other posters have said calling out Trump and his supporters for what they are is something we at DU (if not the media) have been doing all along. Holding a mirror up to them doesn't seem to do anything. I'm starting to get because everyone keeps waiting for Trump to self-destruct and it hasn't happened, and the campaign should never have been able to get traction in the first place.

(32,723 posts)In fact, his tag line is, "I don't get it!"
Example: After the San Bernardino massacre he fixated on the police saying they used "long guns". He kept thinking it was stupid to bring long guns into what he assumed was a small room. He wouldn't let it go grilling each of his guests over it until he said "long guns" at least 20 times.

(11,093 posts)and was thinking that Tweety (ol' BartCop's name for him) had grown a pair. I'm glad he said that. I'm thinking that even shills and apologists are getting pissed off.
Technically journalism? Don't know, but if you want to consider "thought leaders", "pundits", or whatever, at least he's saying it. More and more people need to be willing to put this out in the open. Jon Stewart, Keith Olbermann, and others were breaking the ground in this regard. I'm glad Matthews is willing to finally speak up.
On edit: Goodness only knows what Jon would be thinking or say, and Colbert's off this week.
