PLATTSMOUTH, Neb. — Donny and Marie are shy.

When visitors come, the 4-month-old fox squirrels huddle at the back of their cage. Donny hides inside his padded nest. Marie, a little braver, fixes herself to the nest’s roof and eyes strangers warily.

They aren’t often like this for Tammy Parker.

“You’re usually so good for mama,” she cooed on a recent morning.
