Police find assault rifle, 8,300 rounds of ammunition and body armor in Long Island man’s backseat

A Long Island man was arrested after he was found with more than 8,000 rounds of ammunition, body armor and a loaded assault rifle, officials said Friday.

Mark Vicars, 49, was busted after the weapons were found inside his 2014 Dodge Durango during a traffic stop on Jericho Turnpike in Syosset about 7:40 a.m. Thursday, officials said.

Vicars flashed a fake shield identifying himself as a Federal Air Marshal, officials said.

How much size and volume does all of that take up? I've got to think with packaging that 8300 rounds of ammo is close to 1 cu. meter by itself.

It's strange to consider someone just driving around with a few meters square and 50-60lbs of firearms, body armor and ammo all day unless they're up to something or transporting it to/from someone/somewhere.

I feel like there is more story here than we're going to get.

53. Here's some math
Fri Dec 4, 2015, 05:58 PM
Dec 2015

Assuming these are fairly sizeable rifle rounds

If the bullets are 13 mm in diameters and 100 mm tall, a 10-bullet x 10-bullet layer in a box would be as small as 13 cm on a side by 10 cm tall. A square meter (not cubic) could enclose 49 of these boxes (a layer 7 boxes wide by seven boxes deep) in a 10 cm tall layer for 10 layers to fill up the cubic meter.

That's 100 bullets x 49 boxes per layer x 10 layers = 49,000 rounds that would fit in a cubic meter.

So it looks like it would probably be more like 1/6 of a cubic meter.

People sometimes don't realize how much stuff can fit in a volume.

About the same for 9mm.

So 8000 rounds would be 240 pounds. A case takes up the space of a smallish shoebox.

Rifles with gear weigh about 10 pounds.

Handguns about 2 pounds loaded.

For people who actually know something of the laws around these issues, it tells us whether the presumption of malicious intent that NY can employ for some types of firearms possession applies, whether he's likely to go away for a long time or a REALLY long time.

An Assault Rifle is, by definition an NFA weapon. Those are illegal for non-law enforcement in the state of New York, border to border, no exemptions. An 'assault weapon' might be legal depending on the associate features and whether it was registered.

So it makes a big difference to the informed audience.

I would like to know what they now categorize as an assault rifle, In my past combat roles, assault rifles were capable of firing on full automatic and I am not aware of any fully automatic rifles that can be purchased legally by regular citizens without special licenses. So if he had an assault rifle I believe it could not have been legal and he is direct violation of federal firearms statutes. But please lets be real and call things what they are. A semiautomatic rifle which in physical appearance resembles a fully automatic assault weapon capable of high rates of fire is not illegal nor a true assault weapon . http://abc7ny.com/news/li-man-accused-of-having-many-magazines-weapons-in-car-when-pulled-over/1109536/

Authorities say 49-year-old Mark Vicars was found to be in possession of a loaded .380 pistol, a knife, a loaded assault rifle, a ballistic body armor vest and a tactical vest containing three high-capacity magazines.

And at his home, in a gated community called Hidden Ridge, investigators found even more weapons and ammunition, including a Smith & Wesson .357-caliber handgun, a Sprinfield .45-caliber handgun, a Sig Sauer P229 .40-caliber handgun, a Glock 19 9-millimeter handgun, a Glock 26 9-millimeter handgun and approximately 8,300 rounds of assorted ammunition.

The weapons aren't legal, police say, and neither are flashing lights on his Dodge Durango that he activated when police pulled him over on Jericho Turnpike. They say they were acting on a tip and working with the Joint Terrorism Task Force and the TSA.

"Defendant Vicars then produced a fraudulent shield and identification credentials identifying himself as a federal air marshal," Nassau County police Lieutenant Richard Lebrun said.

We knew the guy had contacted radicals on different occasions; thats enough in itself. We knew he had traveled to the ME. That he had become "different" and much more religious. That they had made several bombs & had the ISIS instructions. The list goes on. They didnt have to leave a note behind SAYING why they did it.
Yet the presidents FIRST statement was to instantly jump to the conclusion that it was another nut with a gun. He should have given the basic statement "we'll have to see what the investigation shows us". On this issue I'll have a major disagreement with him. MAtter of fact, I think he has YET to actually call it what it is, Islamic terrorism.

Too many unbalanced people with guns seeing in this story, only humor or the new normal of blood and brain spattered America.

The man has a sickness, the social pathology of seeking personal power identity by bullet as promoted by NRATERRORISTS.

I simply can not understand those who live in a world of fear where this feels needed and where it can be tolerated without investigating the mental health of gun obsessed people.
