Donald Trump is urging supporters not to do their Christmas shopping at Macy's in retaliation for the department store dumping his signature business clothing line.
Good news, disloyal Macys stock is in total free fall, Trump said in a Facebook post on Friday, accompanied by the companys stock chart. Dont shop there for Christmas!
Macys in July decided to drop Trumps merchandise in response to controversial comments he made about Mexican immigrants, calling them "killers and rapists" in his campaign launch speech.
In light of statements made by Donald Trump, which are inconsistent with Macys values, we have decided to discontinue our business relationship with Mr. Trump and will phase-out the Trump menswear collection, which has been sold at Macys since 2004, the company said in a statement at the time.
We do not believe that disparaging characterizations portray an accurate picture of the many Mexicans, Mexican Americans and Latinos who have made so many valuable contributions to the success of our nations."

The hubris of this guy never ceases. Next week I'm going to NYC to see the Macy's Christmas windows. I'll make sure to buy something. I already spent money there on Black Friday, but I'm sure that I'll find something else to buy.

(10,178 posts)was the late, much lamented Filenes. Now I shop at LL Bdean,Lands End,and occasionally Bloomingdales (closer to me than Macy's).
I'm retired, lazy, and don't need as much as I used to need so mail-order is my favorite type of shopping.

(30,250 posts)I was surprised that they had such good sales. I hadn't been at a Bloomingdale's in a long time, there are none near me and I don't feel like going to the Upper East Side of Manhattan to the flagship store. I was in PA during Thanksgiving and I went to the King of Prussia Mall outside Philadelphia with a friend. We first went to Macy's, tons of sales. I put some gift certificates to good use. LOL!!
I loved Filene's Basement. I'm sorry that it doesn't exist anymore. So many iconic stores are gone. My mother used to sew very well and loved Woolworth. As a little girl we used to go to a big Woolworth near City Hall in Philadelphia. Most of my Barbies came from that store. We would have lunch at the counter and then go to John Wanamaker's. That was a gorgeous store with a famous eagle in its center. They had a fantastic organ and one could listen to the organist play and have tea in the afternoon.
Ahhh, so many memories.
Here's a pic of the inside of Wanamaker's, it's now a Macy's. I'm glad that the building still stands in all its glory.

(10,178 posts)My first job was at Woolworths---downtown Boston.
It was in the early 50s and there was no check out area. People paid at each counter and the salesclerks stood behind the counter. I sold Tangee lipstick and Blue Waltz perfume, among other things. (I'm amazed that I remember that)
I loved the 60 cents an hour too.
By the way, thanks for the wonderful picture of a beautiful building.
Beacool
(30,250 posts)She loved that store. When I was quite young and worked in Manhattan, there was a Woolworth across the street from my job (3rd Ave. & 42nd St.). We didn't have a cafeteria, so I would eat at their lunch counter several times a week. Unfortunately, some months later all Woolworths were closed. It must have been 1997 because I just looked it up and that's the year when they went out of business.
As for the John Wanamaker's building, it's a beauty and I'm glad that Macy's took it over and it's still in use. The bldg. had remained empty for some time when Lord & Taylor bought it. When they decided to close that store I was afraid that the bldg. would be repurposed for offices or, worse yet, demolished. I was thrilled to hear that Macy's bought it. If you open the link there are more pics.

(30,250 posts)Particularly the $20 one with a $50 purchase. I wait until they have their One Day Sale and maximize their purchase power. I did pretty well on Black Friday at the Macy's in the King of Prussia Mall outside Philadelphia. I managed to buy several Christmas gifts for little money. My friend wanted to go to Bloomingdale's and they had great sales too. She bought two evening gowns for less than $100 each.

More than a year after Macys agreed to pay $650K to settle allegations of racial profiling in its stores and promised it would incorporate more staff training to combat such behavior, a woman has filed a class-action lawsuit against the department store, claiming it unfairly detains minority shoppers and puts them in holding cells, whether theyve done anything wrong or not. On top of that, the complaint claims, Macys then extorts those people for bogus fines.
In the complaint the woman says the retailer imprisons minority shoplifters in special holding cells.
This coercive collection practice or scheme has become so profitable that Macys has dedicated an entire unit within its existing store, which operates like a typical jail, equipped with holding cells, where alleged shoplifters are held for hours on end, and are pressured, threatened, and often harassed until they find no reprieve but to make civil penalty payments to (Macys), the suit states.
The plaintiff says that she was detained at Macys flagship Herald Square location in New York City back in July 2014. She claims that a guard took her to the cell under suspicion that she was planning to steal a set of shirts. According to the complaint, she was kept in that cell and questioned for three hours, without being given the chance to call a lawyer or her family, and forced to sign papers admitting her guilt. She accuses the retailer of making her pay $100 fine in cash before she was turned over to police.
Beacool
(30,250 posts)I remember that lawsuit because it was local news in my area. I agree that they should have been sued for profiling and I hope that they have stopped that practice. To be fair, they do have a problem with shoplifters at the flagship store. It's huge and hard to secure. When I was in my early 20s I worked there during a holiday season. I was on the same floor where they had the coats. I remember the manager being out of her wits one day because in a few hours 5 coats had been stolen.

(30,250 posts)He shouts "Look at me" every time he opens his mouth. Retailers struggle enough without him trying to start a boycott. Macy's employs thousands of people nationwide. Hundreds of vendors sell their products through Macy's, but they should all go bankrupt because Macy's stopped selling his ties? It's his own fault. They stopped selling his brand due to his racist, sexist and bigoted mouth. He has no one to blame but himself.

But Trump the clown can get away with saying outrageous things because his supporters are just as nutty as he is.
That's capitalism Donnie. They don't like your product, they don't have to sell it. Now he's using politics to further his business rivalries. Unfit to be dog catcher, let alone anything higher.

(30,250 posts)The flagship store was in Columbus. It closed in 2005, it had opened in 1851. It appears that it was one of the four founding members of Federated Department Stores (along with Williams Filene's Sons Co., Abraham & Straus and Bloomingdale's). It's a pity that the only remaining member is Bloomingdale's.

(42,282 posts)Nine floors of merchandise (six floors, two basements and an annex) numerous restaurants, everything from toys to pets, luggage to books, perfume to exotic foods and the best of Christmas windows...other places had Santa's Helpers, but only Lazarus Downtown had the REAL Santa! It was our Marshall Fields/Bloomingdales/Macy's. Women dressed up to visit there and a shopping trip to Columbus from the surrounding countryside was pointless if you didn't go to Lazarus. The store had four parking garages, including valet parking. No mall could ever come close to Downtown Lazarus.

(30,250 posts)You bad person!!! Actually, I'm almost done too. For some years now I resolve the issue pretty quickly by giving the adults and teenagers a gift certificate to a store where I know they like to shop. Children get toys and other people, like neighbors, get a small gift. Nail salon ladies, hair stylist, etc. get a monetary gift.
Last night I also completed my Christmas cards. I'm about to go to the post office to mail them. Then I'm going to NYC to see the Macy's windows and maybe do a bit more shopping.
Take that, Trump!!!
