(1,521 posts)Way way back when, I found Jimmy Carter's obvious religiosity irritating. I thought he was like every other fundamentalist that I had met and held condemnatory and hostile attitudes towards all who are not like him. In my defense, I was going to university at a school that was in a town that is arguably the true buckle of the Bible belt. There are five Bible colleges in Springfield Missouri. Count them five. Back then I found myself in an environment where I was surrounded by some of them meanest nastiest most judgmental people I've ever encountered in my entire life. This made me instinctively loathe all fundamentalists because they loathed me.
So, I'm ashamed to say I voted for Gerald Ford. This is the only time I have ever voted for a Republican for any office.
What I did not understand at the time was that Jimmy Carter is the closest thing to a true Christian that I've ever witnessed.
If there is a God Jimmy Carter is his representative on earth. He is absolutely fearless and absolutely honest and absolutely good. I wish we could keep him forever.

and certainly not naïve wrt what people everywhere are capable in the name of their religion.
I won't argue the point, but his goodness as a human being would not be diminished one bit absent his faith, IMO.

They believe "working poor" is a myth.
Keep in mind that many of the ones who say this haven't worked since the Clinton Years.

(23,105 posts)Jimmy Carter is the best man to be president during my lifetime, and probably since this country was founded. I really hate Reagan and BFEE for what they did to him, may they rot in hell.

(9,214 posts)Reagan destroyed our chances of having an alternate energy base with fossil fuel playing a minor role for our country. And the Republicans to this day are still slowing down our alternate options.

(23,105 posts)Think how much better the world would be if Carter had gotten a 2nd term, and Gore had been allowed to take the presidency he truly won. No middle eastern war, no 9/11, vibrant alternative energy sector infrastructure made safe. And think of all the jobs those changes would have brought. Our economy wouldn't have cratered sending mass wealth to the rich, the taxes wouldn't have been cut and companies wouldn't have been able to send all our jobs overseas and get paid extra for it.
Such a nice dream.

(2,012 posts)how we will know which refugees are Christians so we can let them in but Jeb says we will know by the way they look, their names, and where they come from.
I notice that Trump has a new adviser who was imprisoned for trying to kill an abortion provider and Cruz and Rubio went to a large conference where the theme is "the Bible tells us we must round up all homosexuals and execute them." And their loyal followers applaud loudly when they tell us all Muslims are our enemies and must be destroyed.
They call themselves Christians; I wonder why we didn't recognize them. Jimmy Carter and MLKing never needed to tell us they are Christians. If your children ask how people will know they are Christians teach them the old Sunday School song "They will know we are Christians by our love, by our love."

Very good news also that he's still making a hell of a lot of sense.
