http://www.thenewcivilrightsmovement.com/johnwright/texas_gop_moves_toward_vote_on_seceding_from_unionFinal Vote Saturday On Whether Proposal Will Appear On Primary Ballot
Texas GOP leaders are set to vote Saturday on whether to place a measure on the March 1 ballot in favor of seceding from the Union.
The proposal cleared the Texas Republican Party's Resolutions Committee on Friday and is set for a vote by the 40-member State Republican Executive Committee on Saturday.
If it passes, the resolution would place a non-binding measure on the primary ballot in favor of secession, and one recent poll suggests that GOP voters would approve it.
"If the federal government continues to disregard the constitution and the sovereignty of the State of Texas, the State of Texas should reassert its status as an independent nation," the resolution states.

(23,690 posts)and any other federal institution currently supporting Texas as well as a refund of the stimulus funds we sent your way. Oh and take care of all the highways in you state by yourself. And forget any Federal grants for your universities and colleges. Oh and that pesky border between Texas and Mexico...hey it's your responsibility now.

(26,623 posts)when Mexico abolished slavery.. Texas is the only state that seceded from two different countries over the abolition of slavery. Texas was a failed republic and joined the union deeply in debt, bailed out by the good people of the USA.

Like everywhere in America, there are wonderful Texans, but the loudmouth, blowhard, racist and ridiculous fools that speak for Texas, I'm talking Louie Gohmert, Ted Cruz, and scores of others who make us cringe and want to detest all Texans and Texas.
Here's who I prefer to associate with Texas; Barbara Jordan, Molly Ivins, Jim Hightower, Ann Richards, LBJ, Willie Nelson, etc., etc., and all the good Texans who grace this board with their wit and wisdom.

(14,308 posts)shouldn't there be some Constitutional way for a state to secede?
How can it be that once you join an organization, you can never unjoin, no matter how much the organization has changed from the one you joined. The only example I can think of is the mafia.

(10,650 posts)One: Get a constitutional amendment passed that allows secession. Very unlikely given the high hurdles involved.
Two: Sue the Federal Government to allow it to secede. It would go to the Supreme Court. Even a right wing court would have trouble permitting it. But with nut jobs like Thomas and Scalia, who knows?

(4,221 posts)makes me concerned because there would some ugly consequences beyond economics!
I do not even want to imagine what would happen to any migrants or undocumented workers, any Muslims, any atheists, any uppity women, any outspoken liberal activists still in Texas who had not fled by the time this nightmare bill passed their legislation and Gov Abbott signed it.
I know the secession will NEVER happen.
But the idea of secession represents dim, simplistic reasoning by some very short-sighted people and we should encourage the idea of thinking this decision through for the average Texan. If we begin to list out the devastating consequences of this action - consequences to the nation and to the people of Texas and to those in and around the borders of Texas and Mexico -- it becomes clear that this would be a monumentally idiotic, catastrophic undertaking.
There would be staggering economic and societal upheaval and losses.
The US would reclaim all its resources and stop funding for federal programs - (military equipment, personnel, bases, coast guard, highway funding and upkeep, rail trains, govt internet routers, postal equipment, federal prisons, NASA, FBI, CIA, and more pressing - Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, federal student loan programs, satellite transmissions, etc.) the list goes on for days
No matter what conversion steps they took in advance, I think their economy would simply collapse on Day One.
Every American and international corporation headquartered there would flee at the speed of light to avoid currency devaluation and plummeting stocks (Ball Aerospace, large US and international banks, American and Southwest Airlines, restaurants, telecommunications, cable, trucking companies, etc)
Most Americans with resources would flee to an established nation where they have citizenship and rights (doctors, surgeons, lawyers, professionals, educators) causing an immediately skills-drain
The start up costs for Texas to establish and protect itself as an independent nation would exceed several TRILLION dollars and take several years (establishing and minting currency, establishing a stock exchange, funding a military, defending their borders, setting up state departments, negotiating treaties, establishing postal service) again the list goes on for days.
I wonder how money would flow? What family member or tourist would want to cross the border to get there and possibly get stuck?
The challenges become almost incomprehensible to list, much less to overcome.

Once they have Texas, they'll be waging war on other states to take them over. And their citizens will become desperate, feral marauders. Just like their existing republican politicians are today.

(8,758 posts)* All military assets.
* All other government equipment and assets.
* All federal employees.
* All U.S. Currency.
Things you can enjoy when you're an independent nation:
* Coming up with your own currency and valuation.
* Coming up with your own military and paying for it with above currency.
* Paying the United States of America fair market value of USA owned property can can't be carted out when you leave the U.S. (actual buildings, in-ground infrastructure such as cabling and any power plants, etc.)
* Coming up with a taxation system to pay for items above, as well as all infrastructure needs.
And, just because I like you, Texas, here's a bonus item for you to enjoy, free of charge:
* Filling in the economic void the U. S. Federal Government provides in both funds and employment.

(36,827 posts)The Texas GOP could really give a fuck about secession. What they are really doing is throwing red meat to the mouth breathers in Texas so they show up at the polls.
The real message that should be promoted is how the GOP is playing their useful idiots like a tune.
