The tipping point is starting right now.
President Obama is drawing the first line in the sand, right this very moment.
Supported by the many, many who are questioning gun nuttery since the Planned Parenthood gun attack and the gun attack in San Bernardino.
Please proceed to criticize a sitting Democratic President at Democratic Underground.
Please support those on no-fly lists and domestic terrorists for their 'right' to have guns.
Please continue to prop up Trump and the other GOP clowns that have your back.
Please proceed.

(15,429 posts)said about guns.
I don't own any guns, but it all seems like common sense approaches to the issues at hand while still complying with the right to keep and bear arms.
Unlike the bans and confiscations so many on the extreme left wing have been demanding...

(70,744 posts)2. I am often puzzled by many DU posts containing cultural references totally over my head.
3. In assessing, evaluating, replying to most of my posts the rule of thumb is: (As in, "Physician, do no harm": ) First, do not *OVERTHINK* (whatever UTUSN said).
So, starting with #3 first, asking for policy details ("too old to re-enlist" is way overthinking, giving my off-the-top-of-my-head too much credence as a dictum. But now that we're there, my target (as it were) is gunnutters, who in my view are mostly non-military, non-law-enforcement, who have a fantasy life towards guns, based on movies, John WAYNE (who was FAKING IT, an ACTOR, and a draft dodger). The 2nd A-ers Open Carry a-holes find it more "patriotic" to wage pretend-war on us civilians by prancing into J.C.Pennys with long arms strapped to their backs than by exposing themselves to actual combat through military service against real combatants. My comment was aimed at the drug-store "warriors" and was not intended to be interpreted as investing veterans with gun-specific expertise as a qualification in their possession.
I see veterans and guns more as POSSIBLY applying their experience (which is not all about guns) with a bit of being a tad more informed about consequences, POSSIBLY having a tad of deference toward protocols, and possibly observing last resort criteria regarding actually firing weapons (deadly force). It's like, the physically most gigantic dudes tend not to unleash all they've got when being taunted by pipsqueaks.
******On to #2: Who is HEINLEIN? The science fiction writer (is that "Stranger in a Strange Land"?) -- whoever, I might have read a few paragraphs of this dude (if he's who you refer to) but absolutely not in the quantity or depth as to put him in the "influence" (on me) category. And I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you are not associating me with "a total rightwing nutbag." Here we're back in "overthinking" territory since I plead Not Guilty to being a philosopher on the topic of "linking citizen rights with military service."
As I said, my post was off the top of the head and aimed at Open Carry jerks.

How to Ban Guns: A step by step, long term process
By sporks

***snip***
The very first thing we need is national registry. We need to know where the guns are, and who has them. Canada has a national firearms registry. We need to copy their model. We need a law demanding all firearms be registered to a national database. We need to know who has them and where they are. We need to make this as easy as possible for gun owners. The federal government provides the money and technical expertise, and the State police carry it out. Like a funded mandate. Most firearms already have a serial number on them, so it would really be a matter of taking the information already on the ATF form 4473 and putting it in a national database. I think about 6 months should be enough time.

Of course gun owners oppose gun registration just for that reason.
Look at it this way.
They've gone from bleating the fiction of saying they want 'reasonable and responsible' gun control to honestly stating outright that they want to ban and confiscate guns. Progress!
First the 2nd, then we go after those other pesky amendments starting with the 1st. Anyone who doubts that need only look at campuses and the chilling effects the SJW's complaints are bringing about.

(2,535 posts)I am also a gun owner. I have nine long guns and one 4-10 pistol. The .22 rifles do hold several bullets but the shotguns & other rifles hold no more than 5 bullets/shells.
I will gladly give them up or abide by any restrictions the congress shall pass. I will just add that to the continuing education requirements for herbicide/pesticide application, drivers license and all others.
I am a grandfather and my grandchildren live in the city so I worry about them and think it is time to apply some restrictions for firearms.
You mention Clinton and the 1994 election and that gun control legislation lost the election for many Democratic legislators.
Hillarys healthcare program drew heavy criticism too and all were needed. So we lose, we get up and try again.
Well, Lyndon Johnson got the Civil Rights passed and the Democrats lost the south BUT IT WAS THE RIGHT THING TO DO!

(15,429 posts)In many cases, the only way to have access to a gun range, one must be a member of the NRA.
NRA membership funds do not go to their political action group. That money comes from the gun manufacturers.

(15,429 posts)membership dues are almost nothing.
The gun manufacturers donate an order of magnitude of more money to the political wing, too.
The NRA really isn't about gun ownership, it's about selling guns.

(13,340 posts)Fortunately, in my state, we have public gun ranges (where I don't always feel safe... some folks there don't follow the 4 rules), but there is a private range near me that does NOT require NRA membership. I'm fortunately in a position where I will never send those morons a dollar.
I've been shooting at indoor and outdoor ranges since I was four. I've never been to a range that requires membership in the NRA.

(15,429 posts)The deal is, the NRA gives some gun clubs grants to fund ranges with the caveat being required membership for all who use the range.
The program is mostly funded by the gun manufacturers.
Personally, I'd never use such a range.

(18,585 posts)I did not support the list when Republicans created them, I do not support their use by Democrats now, I will never support the use of such lists to deny rights OR privileges without due process.
These lists are a mockery of our Constitutional protections and no one who claims to be progressive should support the existence of such lists.

(13,340 posts)you have a right to know if you're on it, and a right to challenge it. A denial of rights requires due process.

This OP certainly did confirm the identity of the gun nuts.
