Be ready to be scared! How fucking gullible are we???
Homeland Security Secretary Jeh (JAY) Johnson says details about the new system will be announced soon. He says the change is needed to better inform Americans about the country's security posture.
This will be the third terror alert system put in place by DHS since the September 2001 terrorist attacks. The much maligned color-coded system was replaced in 2011 by the National Threat Advisory System.
Johnson says terrorist threats to the U.S. have evolved and terrorist-inspired threats are a growing concern. He says the changes to the system will keep the public better informed. He didn't provide specific details.
Johnson made the announcement Monday at a Defense One magazine forum.

(14,691 posts)"Ladies and Gentlemen, this is an important announcement from the New York City Police Department:
Keep your belongings in sight at all times. PROTECT YOURSELF! If you see a suspicious package or activity on the platform or train DO NOT KEEP IT TO YOURSELF. Tell a police officer or an MTA employee. REMAIN ALERT AND HAVE A SAFE DAY!"
Over time I memorized it by hearing it over and over. Seems to me they're playing it a lot more lately.
But yes, we have to live life. We get vacation days, sick days and personal days. We don't get terrorism days.

As for the petulance of "what part of New escapes you...?" from the story: He says the changes to the system will keep the public better informed. He didn't provide specific details...."

(15,429 posts)The terror alert system hasn't been overhauled since the Bush administration other than to mostly do away with it.
So how the fuck do you have any clue what it will be?

(16,286 posts)are sector specific alerts that primarily go to local law enforcement then the local media of that area.
These systems were used solely to scare us and divert our attention under W.
Obama himself has no interest in doing that, as is clear by the past 7 years, but those under him who have to justify their existence are another matter.
I wonder if these warnings apply to the vast rightwing terror organizations who primarily target healthcare providers.

(15,429 posts)How do we know that what you describe as being what is needed ISN'T what is being put in place?
randys1
(16,286 posts)MohRokTah
(15,429 posts)was to scrap the one put in place by the prior administration, I think your description is probably very close to the mark of what will be put in place. Most likely it will require a high degree of confidence in the intelligence to move to a media announcement phase.
This would be consistent with how this administration has handled the issue of terrorism for the past seven years.

(5,525 posts)It's not about "disliking" Obama. That's a strawman. You can criticize Obama for many reasons, as I'm doing here.
How is this alert system any different from the first? It seems to have the same purpose.
randys1
(16,286 posts)Oneironaut
(5,525 posts)Let me guess - it will always be "elevated," just like the old system. There will be token "low" levels thrown in that will never be used.
You have a better chance of death by almost everything else than a terrorist, including lightning and your own countrymen.

This way the terrorists won't know what alert level we are on because no one else will, either.
