I live in Chicago too. I clicked on one of the pins that is placed at the north side of Wacker and North Wells, and it says the shooting took place at the 3700 block of South Wells--which is probably at least 6 miles away. A second pin was placed at Canal and Washington Streets (which would be about 400 block West Washington), but the data says the shooting took place on the 5100 block of West Washington, on the far west side, many miles away).

The pins are wildly inaccurate when you look at them more closely. The one shooting that was fatal in my general vicinity (and which is accurate) is one I heard about--at a restaurant-nightclub that has since been shut down.

I read my alderman's weekly e-newsletter, as well as my neighborhood assn emails--so I would probably be aware of any fatal shootings in my immediate neighborhood.

But I live very rural in SD Black Hiils.
Out of curiosity I looked up the last shooting death in Fall River County SD. It was 2012 when a man shot a woman. Don't know any more.

I want to avoid your neck of the woods. I assumed major city from the map but the town-names all sound like bumble-fsck and there is no major city named that I can see.

radical, 73 years old gun nut. Living in his kids back yard in a tent. Prepper, survivalist. Went in his house with his gun to tell his son to turn down the music. Son tells him to leave and pops shoots him close range in the face. Pops will never ever see freedom again.

I assume so but people have survived being shot in the face before (It's why professional killers double-tap head-shots.) and at age 73, even an assault with weapon conviction is functionally a life-sentence.

was 35 with 3 kids. The old man was a radical and has wanted to kill someone all his life. He expected it to be ISIS or some immigrant. He didn't plan on it being his son. Yes it will be a life sentence.

Mostly accidental if they're very nearby. Kids with guns in a neighborhood where stats keep telling me gun ownership should be very low. Mostly minority single-family residences. There's a spike not far from me in single-residence low-income public-assistance housing. I was surprised to see that the shooting rate was that high. I'm not going to share this with my wife.

This all tells me that the stats are probably really wrong--when you look at demographics about gun ownership, illegal firearms aren't always reported, those owned by teens and adult children at home aren't always acknowledged. Stats are only as good as their assumptions, and one assumption is honesty. We cite them, as do everybody else, uncritically when they support our already-held views.

A decent percentage were police shootings in a primarily minority area. Most of the time there are at least two deaths. One by the hands of the policeman. One by the hands of the guy (usually) the policeman killed. Most are black or Latino. Most are in apt. complexes or at bars/clubs. I keep waiting for a movement to protest their deaths, but that's internal and therefore it's inappropriate to mention the problem.

Houston is fairly racially and economically segregated. You cross a certain street lined with businesses and that map suddenly shows nearly no shootings, accidental, homicidal, or police. It shows some, but if you click on the tack to see the address you find that the address doesn't match the tack. Database error. One side is minority (black or Latino) with larger families, low-ed/low-income (the two are closely correlated, as are income and family size).

I thought it was sort of OK to have guns in rural areas, but not in cities as the latter weren't needed.

Ve-l-l-l-y interesting, but contradictory.

The last we heard and that was two days ago,126 classified as Homicides,no idea as to the number of wounded that survived. Ninety nine percent are in and around the Las Vegas City,Boulder Hwy,and a couple of blocks either side of the Strip. The closest to us was about six miles away and that was a domestic. So damn many drug deals that go south, and it usually involves African Americans against African Americans as well as Hispanic against Hispanic. The local Powers That Be,will never admit to this. And the real alarming thing is the number of suicides,we are in the top two areas of occurrences. I have said this before, great retirement area for Desert Living, you just stay the hell away from the Casinos.

I live in a fairly gun-heavy area, too. Lots of hunting and competitive shooting.

ON EDIT: Nearest gun death to me is over twenty miles away during a burglary. The thief shot and killed the homeowner in their sleep.
