[Burns, OR] The armed militants who have occupied the Oregon wildlife refuge may be encouraged the apparent lack of response by government authorities. But their stand is reportedly doomed anyway, since they picked the worst possible location to make their point, according to a source at the American Birding Association.
The Malheur sanctuary is home to approximately 320 avian species beloved by birders. BIG mistake.
The nearby town of Burns has seen a rapid influx of birders who are determined to eject the illegal occupiers. The birders possess a number of advantages when it comes to combat in open terrain, according to those familiar with the hobby.
They are masters of disguise who know how to blend into the outdoor environment, whereas the enemy, with their pickups, massive guns, and loud obnoxious personalities, tend to stick out like a sore thumb.
The birders are also exceptionally skilled at spotting the enemy first so they will have the full advantage of surprise, and their uniform of loose fitting garments and comfortable walking shoes means they are quick and light on their feet, much like the Viet Cong during the Vietnam war. They are also equally ruthless when pushed.

(5,122 posts)And TP, of course.
The fact that the occupiers asked for TP shows that they are not going to be there for long. Totally unprepared for the wilds of a bird sanctuary.
Someone should set up a path of Devil Dogs leading to a jail cell.
'Bound to catch a few.

(34,136 posts)My husband's great grandfather, Thomas Sadler Roberts, who studied birds in Minnesota from the 1870s on, carried a Marble Arms Game Getter gun, with dual barrels, .22 and .44, when out birding in the wilderness. He'd shoot birds for specimens with the .22 and had the .44 in case a bear came on him.

(2,992 posts)...the bit about not calling us bird watchers is absolutely correct. We will hurt you if you do that.
(As an aside - when I was in grad school, I made the mistake of calling myself a birder, and my hobby birding, in Germany. My wife at the time, and my friends, would go on long birding trips. I would go birding in the Schlossgarten before hitting the museum collections during my visit. I birded everywhere. Not knowing that turning the German word for "bird" [Vogel] into a verb [vogelen] gives one a word basically meaning "to fuck." In my defense, I was speaking in English [mein Deutsche ist nicht gut] and the people I spoke with kept a straight face throughout. I didn't learn of my faux pas until the following year, when a friend went to Europe and learned of some Yank who had been "birding [snicker snicker] in ze voods."
Seriously, though - there are more birders out there than militia idiots. And there are lots of duck hunters who rely on the NWR system, and they're armed.

(22,669 posts)I want to be one of the birders. Get those terrorist land destroyers off the bird refuge. There's a reason why it's a bird refuge. THERE'S NO OTHER PLACE LEFT FOR THEM TO GO. GTFO their property!!
Only hope is that this jealous terrorist Y'allqueda group doesn't begin shooting unnecessarily.
