I promised some of my art friends here an essay/discussion today...
It won't appear due to my fight with shingles which has me down for the count...
Hoping for a better day tomorrow and another Friday next week for the art chat. Maybe the dang shingles will leave me alone...but I sure don't wish it on anyone else...
Take care, folks...

I hope a virtual hug won't hurt too much.

Take care CT, hope you get to feeling better soon.

(12,126 posts)Your body is short on Lysine, Vitamin B - take orally.
If the spots are still intact, dab cotton balls soaked with apple cider vinegar to reduce size. If broken, this will sting, won't act as quickly but will reduce time of the attack.
I learned this over the past decade. it helps.

(60,010 posts)Amino acids come in pairs.....so there is Lysine and there is L-lysine. L-Lysine is effective in preventing cold sores, and may be in shngles.
I was taking it when I had my bad shingle attack and who knows if it helped reduce what could have been even worse symptoms.
Did not know about the vinegar.....wish I had.

(63,926 posts)think docs don't dare prescribe it for fear of the narcs. Meanwhile, people like me suffer real pain. I don't understand what they think we are doing. We are pracically on our knees begging for relief and they just shrug and turn away...

It makes me mad as hell they are under medicating you.
CTyankee
(63,926 posts)I don't know if it's the docs fault...they are obviously cowed by the narcs that don't want us addicted. I just want the pain to go away and if it won't, some meds to help until it goes away.

(12,232 posts)Mine lasted a long time as well. I ended up having different names for the variety of pain from it - 100 ants biting, the cattle prod, the lightning jolt.
And the overall irritation of anything touching my skin was terrible to deal with. Even silk felt bristling to me.
The only material that didn't irritate me was cotton sheeting. I bought a couple of dresses in similar smooth cotton and they weren't as bad as everything else.
Warm thoughts to you.

(63,926 posts)I jerk in pain sometimes and last night my hands were shaking so badly that I couldn't write anything down.
A little red wine didn't hurt, tho, and I got sleep and felt rested this morning. That's a plus! I don't recommend anyone pounding it down, but it certainly calmed down my nerves that are the problem. I'll see my neuro next Thursday and ask about other kinds of treatments.
My ankles and feet have stopped swelling and are now normal. Dunno what that was about. Of course, I've been in bed for 12 hours so that could just be a natural result...we'll see after I do the shopping I have to do...
suffragette
(12,232 posts)Sleep was the best help and all the more precious for being difficult to attain.
Calming nerves is key since it's all nerve connected and intense nerve pain. It's extra challenging since stress worsens it, but it causes so much stress. A little wine to help with that sounds fine to me since it helped you to sleep and sleep is the great healer, with this more than anything. For me this called an old story to mind, from those books by an English vet. In one of his cases he couldn't find a cure for some sheep that were ill and in pain and ended up giving them shots to at at least let them sleep. To his surprise, they slept for quite awhile, then awoke and were finally recovering. The break from the pain eased the stress that was interfering with their recovery. It wasn't as simple as that for me, but getting sleep and rest and any respite of calming moments I could was key to recovering. Then activity to get fresh air and move muscles and feel human again. I was working so the mix was very challenging. Sometimes I would be counting the minutes until I could go home.
With the continuing pain I had for so long, I also started worrying about neuralgia and that it would never end. It didn't help that I had a large area initially affected either. In my case, I had bouts of the pain hitting me out of the blue for some time after the other symptoms diminished, which caused me stress worrying that it would never fully abate. Fortunately, it eventually did. Sharing this in the hope that if yours follows a similar path, this might help to ease the stress from it in knowing that at least in my case, though I still had the pain continue as surprise shocks for some time, it did go away.
I did try a variety of things during this, with the l-lysine (I think pills and ointment) and the aveno oatmeal baths and good old calamine. They helped to soothe somewhat. And of course the frozen peas for immediate relief.
Feel free to PM me for a shoulder during a bout. I'm still up later due to our time difference so a time that's late for those near you is still early for me.

(14,691 posts)get the shot. I dragged my feet because it cost over $200 and wasn't covered by my insurance (bless their hearts). Also, the tv commercials annoy me. 1/3 of those who had chicken pox will get shingles!!!!. I'd always think, yeah but 2/3 won't. That means a majority of those who had chicken pox won't get shingles.
However, after hearing that a couple of acquaintances (or their relatives) had it and how much they suffered, and considering the possible residual effectss, i grit my teeth and got the shot. It doesn't even totally prevent shingles! And whatever protective effect it has diminishes with age! For +$200 I think it should last a couple of fkg lifetimes.

(63,926 posts)However, after a 12 week period it is officially called Postherpetic Neuralgia, then you are in deep shit. I'm hoping not....
If you have a high pain sensitivity you'll be better able to withstand it. But I am always a baby about pain...

(2,805 posts)They (apparently) have a vaccine but no treatment?
I think I better go to my vaccine store because all three of us kids in our family got chicken pox at the same time. I hope we didn't get it because of one of those chicken pox parties they used to have.

(50,323 posts)You almost have to beg it seems. I remember feeling as if a horse kicked me in the side. What's so strange about shingles is that for months later - for me anyways - you can still feel a burning sensation where the rash was. Not painful, but a nasty reminder. It does go away eventually.

(63,926 posts)I was weaned off Vicoden after major surgeries by my surgeon and it worked out just fine. As I had less pain due to healing, I had a lower dose of Vicoden. I didn't miss it. It was doing the job that was needed and I was fine. I recovered with no addiction whatsoever.
