Longtime Baptist ethicist Richard Land has been issued two reprimands because of his radio show comments on the Trayvon Martin case by the Ethics & Religious Liberty Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention, according to a report in the Baptist Press this morning.
Lands radio show also is being cancelled.
The Baptist Press printed the content of the two reprimands by the committee:
"We reprimand Dr. Land for his hurtful, irresponsible, insensitive, and racially charged words on March 31, 2012 regarding the Trayvon Martin tragedy. It was appropriate for Dr. Land to issue the apology he made on May 9, 2012 and we are pleased he did so. We also convey our own deepest sympathies to the family of Trayvon Martin for the loss they have suffered. We, too, express our sorrow, regret, and apologies to them for Dr. Land's remarks. We are particularly disappointed in Dr. Land's words because they do not accurately reflect the body of his work over a long career at the ERLC toward racial reconciliation in the Southern Baptist Convention and American life. We must now redouble our efforts to regain lost ground, to heal re-opened wounds, and to realize the dream of a Southern Baptist Convention that is just as diverse as the population of our great Nation.

(31,535 posts)In 2001, President George W. Bush appointed Land to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), a federal agency, created by the International Religious Freedom Act of 1988, for the purpose of monitoring the freedom of conscience, thought and religion or belief abroad.
Land was the primary author of the Land letter, an open letter sent to President George W. Bush by leaders of the religious right in October 2002 which outlined a "just war" argument in support of the subsequent military invasion of Iraq.
President Bush reappointed Dr. Land for a second term in June 2004. He was subsequently appointed by then Majority Leader Bill Frist in July 2005. Land continues his service to the Commission.

He is apparently the person that GWB was speaking to when he said something like "God wants me to be for President".
That tells me all I need to know about Richard Land.
