Generally, I think he is serious about becoming president. I also think his motives are the very worst - gratification of his own ego. Doing it to notch the win. Lastly, I don't think he has the temperament to be successful as head of a democratic government and could well get impeached and removed for really serious reasons.
But then I get these notions that he can't possibly be serious. He has yet to set forth even one actual policy position. His whole platform is "est" . . . . biggest, best, fastest, strongest, smartest, handsomest.
Is he actually a long con perpetrated by "them"? Consider that every news organization gives him far more free air time than anyone has ever gotten. MSNBC has become a 24/7 Trumpfomercial. That could only happen because, ironically, the *establishment* wants him to get the nomination . . . . . but maybe only to lose the general. Consider that, some years ago, former House leader Dick Armey was paid to whip up the nuts and kooks and establish what is now the Tea Party, represented in Congress by the more benign sounding Freedom Caucus. That - and gerrymandering - gained them a shitload of House seats. Armey's army (as it were) brought out every political kook, crazy, racist, fascist, delusional hater, and loon in America. Initially seen as a way to boost the GOP over the finish line in the presidential elections, these same macaroons have taken over the GOP. There is now very little room left for serious conservatives, sober legislators, and responsible adults. Instead we have a room full of Louie Gohmerts and Virginia Foxxes, one crazier than the next.
And so my theory is that the real power has determined to burn the house down to save it. Pump Trump to kill the cockroaches. Let him get creamed in the general, suffer 8 years of Bernie Clinton or Hillary Sanders, and then return stronger and far more sober in the future.
For them to do otherwise, it seems to me, is to simply die.
Meanwhile, The Donald is doing what The Donald has done all his life, which is to win by other than straightforward means. It is, indeed, his art of his deals. Bluster. Bullshit. Bullying. Certitude, Supreme confidence. Skid greasing. Teasing. Humiliation. Praise. Insults. Playing cards VERY close to his Trumpwear Made In China vests. Doing, well, exactly what we see him doing every day - several times a day if you watch MSNBC - in this primary run.
But back to "them"s plans. They will goose him along to the nomination. And then they will kill his candidacy.
Of course, there are quid pro quos. In the matter of the politician-turned-reality-TV-star endorsing the reality-TV-star-turned-politician, the Griftess-in-Chief gets face time on TV, an opportunity to refill her depleted cash reserves by begging the rubes to support Trump by giving to her SuperPac. Or something along those lines. In fact, I would not be in the least surprised to learn that she is outright being paid a million or two by Let's Make A Deal just to knock Cruz around. For sure, that would be worth a million or two. (Remember that Caribou Barbie was all in for Cruz when he ran for his Senate seat.)
I suggested above that this was a long con and Don Trumpleone was in on it. However, it *could* be that he is the one being run. Consider my postulated scenario - get the nom and then bomb - but remove his knowledge of the end game. Keep in mind. The Don is an itty bitty billionaire. He would hardly qualify to park cars at the Christmas party at Casas Koch or Walton, or even Chez Adelson. So these real billionaires see what he's about and set about to run him about to attain their goal - Killing the Krazies.
If there is a quid pro quo for Trump, it could very well be membership in the same clud as the grownup billionaires.
Anyway, whatever the game, it is entertaining as hell. But also scary. Imagine if he DOES win it all. We'd be fucked.
So enjoy the show . . . . . but VOTE.

(14,604 posts)But I think there are power elite of whom we have no real knowledge except the occasional Forbes list, and some that are so rich they can avoid even that. Even the Kochs are small potatoes when it comes to these people. Trump is nothing to them but an ignorant rube who can make a good pawn - temporarily.
But you've got it mostly right, I think. The GOP cannot survive unless it finds a way to drive the kooks back under their rocks.
