half as scary as expected. Is this true?

(111,255 posts)that was drifting up against the building across the park. It doesn't take much wind to create deep drifts in light, powdery snow.

(38,455 posts)The good part though is snow is being blown off rooftops, lessening the chance of collapse and or ice damming.

(268,986 posts)So are there less power cuts than expected?
Can't believe I still have power, but I do

(13,447 posts)I stocked up on batteries and filled containers in the bathtub with water. But yeah, it doesn't appear that there were all that many power outages, at least in Maryland.

(29,236 posts)This is the first storm of any kind where the power stayed on... For the 15 years I've lived here. It feels like a luxury!
Also no trees fell on my house. I'm beyond bliss.

(1,385 posts)Never got really bad wind here, but didn't expect it to be bad here. Enough to make some pretty good drifts. As best I can measure it, we got between 25 and 28 inches. Drifts make it hard to tell for sure. I did not hear the thundersnow, unfortunately.
My dead end street has been plowed several times. Quite a difference from Snowmagedden, when it took days to get to us. I'm not going anywhere anytime soon!

(1,835 posts)Central Brooklyn. We have been getting high winds and probably 25 inches of snow. Dying down now a bit.

(8,554 posts)My nephew who lives a little southwest of Baltimore took a brisk walk with his anemometer doohickey (that I gave him when he was a kid), right at dusk, and he measured a gust of 45 mph coming East off the Bay. That was a few hours ago, but the snow was still coming down then, sideways, where he was. Drifts all over.

(21,714 posts)We have over 30 inches and it is still snowing. But thankfully we still have power. I live about 30 miles snorth of DC

(14,691 posts)it depends on location in relation to the wind direction- winds in NYC have been steadiily from the North-Northeast around 30-40 mph with gusts to 60. However, my apt faces south-southwest so the wind wasn't hitting my side of the building - the effect being that as far as I was concerned there wasn't much wind at all.

(103,856 posts)To qualify, it must be :
35 mph SUSTAINED winds (gusts don't count) for 3 hours minimum
visibility less than a quarter mile for 3 hours
It;'s much easier to calculate on a desolate plain (Wyoming, Eastern Colorado, Western Kansas, etc)
